Will continue to bang this drum: this is the system university admins are cramming into every aspect of education. This is the system we are told “isn’t going anywhere” so we all have to adjust to it.

This is huge news in @cameronwilson.bsky.social's @thesizzle.com.au- Microsoft is being forced by the Aus regulator refund all the ultra-dodgy AI plan pushing it was doing for Office 365 Wild that other regions aren't also using regulatory power to punish Microsoft thesizzle.com.au/p/google-sur...
Microsoft is refunding its scummy AI plans so that the ACCC doesn’t go so hard on them
Microsoft is offering refunds to 3 (!) million Australian customers and apologised about its dodgy AI plan pushing (SmartCompany). In an email sent to customers today, Microsoft says it will refund all the additional cost of its Copilot AI plans if people revert to its non-AI plan by the end of the year.

“In hindsight, we could have been clearer about the availability of a non-AI-enabled offering with subscribers, not just to those who opted to cancel their subscription,” the statement said.

grovelling email by Microsoft
The Sizzle: None of this happens if the ACCC hadn’t launched legal proceedings against Microsoft. Notably, this is just for Australian customers. Everywhere else just remains ripped off. If our consumer protections make us a nanny state, then stick a dummy in my mouth and give me a diaper!!! Greatest country in the world!!!!

Government’s wins are often invisible: Systems that avoid plane crashes; alliances that avert war; surveillance that prevent pandemics. Government wins are often *the avoidance of loss.* So how do we tell the story of the destruction of government? The story of future losses *not* averted?

My heart ached when I was reminded that Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for trying to make academic knowledge more accessible to the public. Meta, meanwhile, is doing it for their own bottom line. I'm going to guess that no one at Meta will be looking at spending 35 years in jail for this.
An image of Aaron Swartz with the following text: "Meta illegally downloaded 80+ TB of books from LibGen, Anna's Archive, and Z-library to train their AI models. In 2010, Aaron Swartz downloaded only 70 GBs of articles from JSTOR (0.0875% of Meta). Faced $1 million in fine and 35 years in jail. Took his own life in 2013.

“Torrenting from a corporate laptop doesn’t feel right”: Meta emails unsealedA photo of Aaron Swartz (1986-2013) when he was 19.
Last month, Meta admitted to torrenting a controversial large dataset known as LibGen, which includes tens of millions of pirated books. But details around the torrenting were murky until yesterday, when Meta's unredacted emails were made public for the first time. The new evidence showed that Meta torrented "at least 81.7 terabytes of data across multiple shadow libraries through the site Anna’s Archive, including at least 35.7 terabytes of data from Z-Library and LibGen," the authors' court filing said. And "Meta also previously torrented 80.6 terabytes of data from LibGen."

This is the strategy:
Catherine Zhang, TCL’s vice president of content services and partnerships, then explained to the audience that TCL’s streaming strategy is to “offer a lean-back binge-watching experience” in which content passively washes over the people watching it. “Data told us that our users don’t want to work that hard,” she said. “Half of them don’t even change the channel.”

“We believe that CTV [connected TV] is the new cable,” she said. “With premium original content, precise ad-targeting capability, and an AI-powered, innovative engaging viewing experience, TCL’s content service will continue its double-digit growth next year.”

In ‘Abolish Silicon Valley’ (2020), Wendy Liu points out: many tech companies still see themselves as scrappy startup underdogs, even after becoming behemoths. ‘They don’t realise that their founding myth of disrupting the powerful no longer applies when they become the powerful ones themselves.'
A screenshot of Wendy Liu’s book, Abolish Silicon Valley (2020), with the following quotes highlighted:
‘The problem is when these underdogs start to grow bigger. They may have begun their journey with a critique of the powerful, but it’s an essentially static critique that omits an explanation of why these powerful companies got to be the way they are. The establishment — the banks, the hotel chains, the taxi companies — are the bad guys, and the scrappy founders are the good guys, and that’s how it will be forever.’

David Simon, a writer of some acclaim, expressed my opinions about this better than anyone else I've seen so far.
SIMON: I don't think AI can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.

SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an AI and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.

SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

SHAPIRO: You would rather put a gun in your mouth?

SIMON: I mean, what you're saying to me, effectively, is there's no original way to do anything and...

SHAPIRO: No.

SIMON: Yes, you are.

SHAPIRO: That seems like a kind of absolutist take.

SIMON: Not only I think is it a fundamental violation of the integrity of writers and also of copyright to - you know, when I sold all the scripts I sold, you know, 150 to HBO and, you know, maybe another 50 to NBC, I didn't sell them so that they could be thrown into a computer with other people's and be used again by a corporation. So...

SHAPIRO: So would you ever agree to a contract that saw any role for AI at all?

SIMON: No. I would not.

I’m reading: Wendy Liu’s Abolish Silicon Valley (2020). It’s part memoir, part manifesto, as Liu chronicles interning at Google and founding a startup before becoming disillusioned. I knew I’d find it interesting, but I didn’t expect Liu’s reflections on work to hit so close to home:
An excerpt from Wendy Liu’s memoir Abolish Silicon Valley (2020): ‘Whatever mark I might leave on this world was mediated by my work, and I was growing increasingly worried this this work was not especially meaningful.’
