The same paper by @olivia.science, @marentierra.bsky.social et al. (2026): zenodo.org/records/2008... also explains how "Knowledge production is ... safeguarded by (inter)national codes of conduct for research integrity (ALLEA 2023; KNAW et al. 2018)." 🧵
Honesty implies that we do not secretly use AI technologies without disclosure, and that one does
not make unfounded claims about the presumed capabilities of AI technologies (this also follows
from Responsibility; see example from MIT Economics 2025, where perhaps too little too late was
done).
Scrupulousness demands, among other things, that scientists only use AI products whose functional-
ity is well-specified and validated for its specific scientific usage (cf. Kwisthout 2024; Kwisthout and
Renooij 2025). This includes terminological precision about what formalisms, models, and/or tech-
nologies are used (recall Figure 1) and rigorous argumentation to motivate why these technologies
are appropriate for the scientific purposes at hand.
Transparency requires that the AI technologies are open source and computationally reproducible.
Here we must recall the technology industry’s obfuscatory tactics: “the name of the current
producer of ChatGPT. ‘OpenAI’ sounds like it is engaged in open science, but as we have now
seen, ‘open’ never really means what you think it does.” (Mirowski 2023, p. 738; see also Dingemanse
2025; Hao 2025; Jackson 2024; Liesenfeld and Dingemanse 2024; Liesenfeld, Lopez, et al. 2023;
Maffulli 2023; Maris 2025; Nolan 2025; Solaiman 2023; Thorne 2009; Widder et al. 2024)
Independence means that scientists ensure that their research is unbiased by AI companies’ agendas,
and that any potential conflicts of interest are declared in publications and other public communi-
cations (this also follows from Honesty and Transparency; cf. Mohamed Abdalla and Moustafa
Abdalla 2021; Atkin 2025; Forbes and Guest 2025; Knoester et al. 2025).
Responsibility precludes scientists from using AI products whose use is irresponsible, e.g. harmful to
people, animals, and the environment, or otherwise in violation of legal guidelines (e.g. copyright,
data privacy, labour laws, Butterick 2025; Cole 2025; Rijo 2025; Tafani 2024a). Minimizing harm is ...

The conclusion is NOT "we need to debias LLMs" Besides that it's impossible, it also detracts from the point, which is: We shouldn't use machines to offload of the very cognition that is constitutive of the work to be done & supercharge existing inequities and injustices in the process. 🧵

Journalists need to stop letting "our commitment hasn't changed" slide without context. Emissions continue growing, companies are getting worse at reporting and are increasingly building with (dirty, inefficient) behind-the-meter simple-cycle gas. The Target is a decoy irrelevant to decision-making.
“The world looks different now than when we co-founded the climate pledge,” said Margaret Callahan, an Amazon spokeswoman. Still, “our commitment hasn’t changed,” she said.4-tile figure for Google, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft. Each pane shows MtCO2e versus year, with curves for Unadjusted, Adjusted, and Target. On each plot, the Target goes down while Unadjusted grows rapidly and Adjusted is in-between (mostly growing). Amazon is missing recent data.

Open Letter: Stop the Uncritical Adoption of AI Technologies in Academia It's been a year & people tell me they've changed their mind, feel safer now to sign, etc. So I'm sharing it again for them. We're almost at 2k & anybody from anywhere can add their names. openletter.earth/open-letter-...
We call upon you to:

• Resist the introduction of AI in our own software systems, from Microsoft to OpenAI to Apple. It is not in our interests to let our processes be corrupted and give away our data to be used to train models that are not only useless to us, but also harmful.

• Ban AI use in the classroom for student assignments, in the same way we ban essay mills and other forms of plagiarism. Students must be protected from de-skilling and allowed space and time to perform their assignments themselves.• Cease normalising the AI hype and the lies which are prevalent in the technology industry's framing of these technologies. The technologies do not have the advertised capacities and their adoption puts students and academics at risk of violating ethical, legal, scholarly, and scientific standards of reliability, sustainability, and safety.

• Fortify our academic freedom as university staff to enforce these principles and standards in our classrooms and our research as well as on the computer systems we are obliged to use as part of our work. We as academics have the right to our own spaces.

• Sustain critical thinking on AI and promote critical engagement with technology on a firm academic footing. Scholarly discussion must be free from the conflicts of interest caused by industry funding, and reasoned resistance must always be an option.

Yup. I think this fits their trajectory, indeed. Part of a wider attempt at claiming that we should just find ways to use these "tools" through some pragmatic acceptance. See: doi.org/10.5281/zeno... bsky.app/profile/oliv...
Second, the accommodation reflex and its institutional
form: The accommodation reflex errs differently and
more consequentially (see Table 1). Its institutional
articulation is literacy-laundering, the repackaging of
corporate product adoption as educational empowerment.
When technology companies offer teachers and students
‘AI training’ or promote ‘AI literacy,’ they are engaged in
brand marketing, framed as a progressive, philanthropically
fundable intervention. The literacy label locates the problem
in users’ understanding rather than in systems’ design, and
in doing so, displaces accountability from the companies that
built and profit from these systems toward the educators and
students who are expected to become fluent in them, and
forecloses the prior question of whether fluency is the goal
at all. The accommodation reflex, in its institutional form,
makes un-training structurally unthinkable by presupposing
integration as inevitable; a critical account of AI literacy,
by contrast, is not primarily about how to use systems
but whether, when, and under what conditions their use is
warranted at all (viz. Guest, Suarez, & van Rooij, 2025; Sano-
Franchini, 2025).

For more thoughts on the role of 'critical thinking' see our CAILs framework, by @olivia.science, @marentierra.bsky.social and me. 📝 Full paper: zenodo.org/records/1778...
Figure 1: The important dimensions of CAILs across research and education; clockwise from 12 o’clock: Conceptual Clarity is the idea that terms should refer. Critical Thinking is deep engagement with the relationships between statements about the world. Decoloniality is the process of de-centring and addressing dominant
harmful views and practices. Respecting Expertise is the epistemic compact between professionals and society.
Slow Science is a disposition towards preferring psychologically, techno-socially, and epistemically healthy practices. The lines between dimensions represent how they are interwoven both directly and indirectly.

Please consider not saying that some AI models or some statistical models are good, useful, beneficial, whatever else positive, in science if it's not your research area. It's ok not to know things. It's ok not to both side things. It's ok to ask colleagues who are experts.

So in other words, coming up with strategies, algorithms, programs etc. is the creative part (as we did in class w/ coming up with sorting strategies). Executing a program once specified is what a machine can do. But the, analysis, creativity and specification is our achievement, not the machine's.

Some examples of decolonial automata/computations, apropos of giving a mini talk on this tomorrow: Towards Critical Artificial Intelligence Literacies doi.org/10.5281/zeno... 🐯 Tipu's tiger is amazing; sadly stolen & now in the V&A, created in India & depicting a tiger mauling an English man. 1/n
On the flip side, we can include positive examples in our teaching on the history of AI: Tipu’s
tiger from late 18th century India, featuring the eponymous robotic cat mauling a European man
(Karp et al. 2013); the Antikythera Mechanism from ancient Greece, which was a clockwork astro-
logical calender; and the Mayans’ calendrical system that was highly precise and directly translat-
able to a system of gears. We can also explain the origin of ‘algorithm’ and ‘algebra’, conceptually
developed during the Islamic Golden Age. These serve not only to properly contextualise the his-
tory of AI (Mayor 2018), but to reimagine with students what could be done differently.
Regardless of AI, science has always been intertwined with domination, extraction, binary
thinking, and the imposition of hierarchies (Tacheva et al. 2023). For example, the Cartesian dualist
idea that the mind can be separated from the body is at the core of AI hype. Corporate discourses
around AI feature preposterous claims, such that ‘ChatGPT has PhD level cognition capacities’,
and they will be able to surpass human intelligence in the near future (Welt 2025), implying that
technologies are human-like. However, far from LLMs having cognitive capacities, companies ob-
fuscate the labour that is extracted from data workers (Miceli et al. 2020). In the classroom, we
should question the mind and body binary and render visible its eugenical and colonial legacies.
While we refute corporate claims, we also take them seriously as dehumanising workers, women,https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tipu%27s_Tiger Tipu's Tiger, Tippu's Tiger or Tipoo’s Tiger is an 18th-century automaton created for Tipu Sultan, the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore (present day Karnataka) in India. The carved and painted wood casing represents a tiger mauling a near life-size European man. Mechanisms inside the tiger and the man's body make one hand of the man move, emit a wailing sound from his mouth and grunts from the tiger. In addition a flap on the side of the tiger folds down to reveal the keyboard of a small pipe organ with 18 notes.[1]
