Something remarkable is happening: James Talarico is running an expansively pro-immigrant campaign in Texas, a state Trump won by 14 points, speaking in Biblical terms about our duty to "the stranger." And it's resonating. That's seismic. 1/ (new piece) newrepublic.com/article/2160...

This thread is very good and very important to understand, especially given the AI regulation debate. Even assuming good faith among actors (note: do not do this), Congress is weighing opinions from factions with disparate points of view without a strong factual foundation. It's an impossible ask.

And this info fragmentation is a key part of it. Sometimes an individual or small group of Senators or reps will get good info from good-faith advocates and build momentum to get a narrow bill across the finish line. But by and large, Congress doesn’t get much done and runs on before-times fumes.

Writing can externalize information that would otherwise have to be remembered. It can't put attention or concentration into the world. Those are processes one must still carry out while composing or using notes. Formulating an explanation requires selection, retrieval, organization, and revision.
One thread I didn’t have room to pursue in the essay is that writing is itself a technology for cognitive offloading. It lets us put memory and attention and concentration into the world rather than carrying everything in our heads. That is enormously useful, but it might also mean that we exercise some capacities less.
The humanities and social sciences are so lopsided in privileging writing — and I suspect ease of assessment is a major driver — that we have obscured the costs to these other capacities for thought and have become lazy about imagining alternative ways of cultivating them. AI dramatically highlights the same question.
What kinds of thinking should we be willing to offload, and what kinds do we want students to keep practicing for themselves?

You can also see exactly when this happened by watching Congress’ relationship with the courts go from a sophisticated dialectic in tech policy cases (e.g., Turner I-II) straight into the toilet by the time the Internet takes off. Congress hasn’t passed comprehensive tech legislation since 1998.
