Excited to share this pre-print from my PhD work! We explore a Pmk1-Mst12-Bip1 network required for appressorium-mediated infection by the blast fungus 🌾 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... Thread 👇

A Pmk1-Regulated Mst12-Bip1 Network Coordinates Appressorium Function, Effector Deployment, and Invasive Growth by Magnaporthe oryzae
To cause rice blast disease, the filamentous fungus Magnaporthe oryzae develops a specialised infection cell called an appressorium, which generates enormous turgor to breach the rice leaf cuticle. Al...

Big thanks to co-authors Dan Bebber, Diane Saunders and @nrpdtp.bsky.social for the support. Special thank you to @hsuanpai.bsky.social for the beautiful illustration of the wheat stem rust complex life cycle
The macrocyclic life cycle of Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt). The Pgt life cycle involves five spore types and two hosts: a primary cereal host and a taxonomically unrelated alternate host, typically from the genus Berberis.

One question that stuck with me early in my PhD was whether the experimental data underpinning wheat stem rust epidemiological models were still fit for purpose. Our new review digs into the evidence, how it’s used in models, and where the biggest gaps remain.
