Do we really understand how complex systems evolve? Based on experimental evolution in stable vs fluctuating temperature conditions, we show that adaptive mutations in the fungus Zymoseptoria tritici are (i) massively pleiotropic, and (ii) opposed to the phenotypic plasticity.
Graphical summary of the experimental evolution protocol. Strains of the fungus Zymoseptoria tritici were raised in stable cool, stable warm, or fluctuating temperature conditions for ~ 250 generations, with 2 initial genotypes are three evolutionary replicates. The transcriptome was sequenced before and after evolution at both temperatures. Illustration of the unexpected response of gene expression plasticity to the evolutionary treatment. Plasticity (i.e. the difference in expression between 23°C and 17°C) evolved more in stable conditions than in fluctuating conditions. Contergradient plasticity: gene expression in stable conditions evolved in a direction opposite to the initial plasticity, as if plasticity in the initial strains was maladaptive.

What did I make my colleagues do today? 1) Invoke Zymoseptoria god 2) Gather ingredients for a wheat-shoot/fungi omelette 3) Measure the impact of early inoculum removal on epidemics to estimate the max effect expected from consumption by springtails (all sound crazy but one is true)
