They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

The problem that we need to solve isn't rogue AI, it's that companies increasingly think they can just price crime into the business model and get away with it

Writers, if you are against AI, do not put your writing into ANY tool that is itself AI. Not to check grammar, not to "prove" you wrote it yourself. Everything you give them becomes part of their data, even if it's only to "improve their service" or whatever BS they tell you.

One clear sign of AI psychosis is the deep belief that one has achieved profound discoveries that must be shared with the world. But the non-hallucinating audience does not share the enthusiasm—either because the content is actually quite mediocre (or bc they understand the technology)

Calvin's dad at the computer: "It used to be that if a client wanted something done in a week, it was considerd a rush job, and he'd be lucky to get it. Now, with modems, faxes, and car phones, everybode wants everything instantly! Improved technology just increases expectations. These machines don't make life easier - they make life more harassed"

Calvin, holding a package: "Six minutes to microwave this?? Who's got that kind of time?!"

Calvin's dad: "If we wanted more leisure, we'd invent machines that do things _less_ efficiently."

This is a little mean but I also think the idea that “AI must be taught in college” is an older generation projecting their own tech incompetency and anxiety onto a younger one. It sounds interchangeable from saying “TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat should be taught in college,“ which is just lame.

A meaningless assertion. The technology doesn’t and cannot exist in a vacuum. It is what it is because of the context in which it was created. Outside of Capitalism, no one would build it, because it’s literally built on extraction. Separating things from their context is never helpful.
