How about, when someone hands us the power to make stuff faster and cheaper, we don't use it to create more stuff - we use it to create *better* stuff? What really went down is the cost of refining, should we choose to use it for that. codemanship.wordpress.com/2026/08/23/l...

An ancient Greek virtue called ‘sophrosyne’ – sound-mindedness, moderation, self-knowledge – might be exactly what we need to navigate today’s world of AI, social media and misinformation. A philosopher looks at why it’s needed now more than ever:

Why sophrosyne, an ancient Greek virtue, matters more than ever in the age of AI
For the Greeks, sophrosyne was an ideal second to none. It’s just as important today, in an age of internet addiction and misinformation – but harder to come by.

As already warm cities become more and more vulnerable to extreme heat events, or just the “new normal” of hotter and hotter cities every day, here’s just one more reason why more street trees and other greenery are good for streets & cities. It’s just common sense, really. Cooler, cleaner, better.
Graphic showing that streets without trees can be as high temperature as 36, 50 or 50°C, whereas similar streets with trees can be 18, 20 or 26°C

Excelling in … Excel? Inside the high-stakes, secretive world of competitive spreadsheeting

The first: “What the hell, that can’t be real.” The second: “There’s got to be a film about this – I want to watch it so badly.” There wasn’t a film about competitive spreadsheeting, so Kraskov decided to make it herself. The subject appealed to the director, whose work captures “different inner worlds that are a bit unusual on the outside”, including a short film titled Party in the Back, about a mullet festival.
