Art for the Market's Sake: John Banville's False Autonomy
"It's nice to see a work of art win", John Banville said on winning the Booker Prize. Michael G Cronin traces a line from that remark to the neoliberal creative economy, and from there to Banville's defence of Israel's brutality against Palestine.

Meanwhile a big thank you to the two people who bought prints from my trial shop while I was away on holiday. It bought much appreciated pints and pizza, and has me considering adding to the 50 paintings that are currently there - here even: fineartamerica.com/profiles/4-l...

I was thinking with pen & paper about the serenity prayer [Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference] and the Viking Battles meme and to make my doodlings clearer I made a chart. Should it be of use:

It wouldn't be a true celebration of W. B. Yeats's birthday without listening to the great man himself recite his classic poem, "The Lake Isle of Innisfree": I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree, And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLlc...

Currently rereading To the Lighthouse 20 years after reading it (and teaching it) at the age of 28. Radically different experience, especially how I now see Mrs Ramsay. I now find Woolf’s insights into motherhood and middle aged gender roles remarkable. And far more moving.

Oh Lucy Mangan…I adored Bookish right up to the point where you admit you have never read Agatha Christie, due in part to your hatred of David Suchet’s Poirot. I’m aghast!!! Poirot is, in both the books and the Suchet TV adapations, one of my favourite characters in fiction #BookSky 💙📚

An illustrated line from the Prayer Of St. Brendan The Navigator, who is said to have travelled from County Kerry in Ireland to America a thousand years before Columbus made his journey. Trust in the darkness. 🌌 Prints available here: www.ciaraioch.com/artprints/p/...
My "I Will Trust In The Darkness" print against a starry photograph background - the print shows a painting of small wooden sail boat with a red Celtic cross on a white sail travelling into the horizon on a starry night.

Was so looking forward to #HouseOfGuinness and I absolutely hated it. Interesting that the critical reviews widely vary and I’m wondering about the experience of watching this as an Irish vs non-Irish person. It felt stagey, clichèd and depicting Fenians as leprechauns was unforgivable.
