Cowboys again. This time one of our boys has lost his boots. Standing in a field of long grass the cowboy points towards the ground and shouts back to his colleague, “Lil bone people got muh boots.” This makes no sense to the other cowboy who sits atop his horse away from the action. He responds, “Lil wut?” Sure enough in the foreground we see a squad of little bone people scampering through the grass with the stolen cowboy boots. They’re thrilled. How the bone people got the boots off the cowboy is unclear.

Artist’s note: I tend to draw drawings from the same perspective (straight on) most of the time. This idea came about when I was goofin around trying to draw a character from a lower angle. I like that the story unfolds with the foreground, mid-ground, and background all working together. There’s a draft of this one included in the Spooky Pants book. Coming out next week!

The Disney Channel in the 80s and early 90s showed all kinds of quirky Canadian movies, and this one disturbed me for reasons I can’t fully articulate.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

👇🎯 If you send kids the message that the only majors that are good are business & STEM from the time they’re in middle school, & then you don’t find the humanities & social sciences at the college level, it all becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy & that was clearly the point in the first place.

I truly, deeply, sincerely do think the guy flipping burgers at McDonalds should be able to afford rent, bills, and groceries with his paycheck alone. That's kind of the whole point of having a job and I can't believe this is considered a radical position.🤷🏽‍♀️

Honestly, the asexuality part is really important. (Polyamory too for legal reasons especially.) People always demand why asexuality requires protection, but it’s already happening in many religiously conservative places—it’s being labeled a deviant “ideology”.

Literary fiction is coming. It is going to revolutionize the economy. We know that China has already got a start on literary fiction. We can’t afford to be left out of the literary fiction economy. Think of your kids. They might already be engaging with literary fiction.

If your loudest opinion on women’s sports is about preventing transgender people from participating, you aren’t engaged in women’s sports enough to know what “protecting” them would actually mean or count as a “good-faith person who cares”. That’s not care, it’s ignorance.

Why is this just so crazy to read from him. Explaining how the robots are not human. Just spelling it out
tangible benefits across many fields. Yet this power remans entirely tied to data
processing. So-called artificial intelligences do not undergo experiences, do not possess a body, do not feel joy or pain, do not mature through relationships and do not know from within what love, work, friendship or responsibility mean. Nor do they have a moral conscience, since they do not judge good and evil, grasp the ultimate meaning of situations, or bear responsibility for consequences. They may imitate language, behavior and analytical skills, or even simulate empathy and understanding, but they do not understand what they produce, for they lack the affective, relational and spiritual perspective through which human beings grow in wisdom. Even when these tools are described as capable of
"corning " their woy of doing co ic difforont

Man, I'll tell you what: I love those messy, meandering essay drafts from my students because they show thinking rather than product. Messy drafts are a middle finger to the smooth, soulless perfection of AI.
Image shows two lines from Emma Lazurus's poem "The New Colossus" with lines crossed out to instead read, "With silent lips. "Give me your messy, your weird, / Your awkward prose yearning to breathe free..."
