I think for many ppl in higher ed what is particularly galling about the lenient treatment the Cornell frat bros received is that students standing up for human rights are expelled & gender studies programs that might help students understand patriarchy are being shut down across the country

I recommend you to read this article olivia.science/entryism/ by @olivia.science There's a coordinated effort by AI vendors to frame "sane AI usage" (moderate usage, or "rerolling" until its less bad) as the "sane centrism" of the AI question.

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

Unfortunately, I don’t buy the idea that AI competency is an ”essential skill” that “must be taught” in college. College is about learning how to learn and that is best done with books and paper. You can figure out AI after college if you want!

Honestly, if you're going to require a book EXTEND the timeline. It's a mess and unsustainable all around. I think the old suggestions--just require more articles--are a mess, too. The alternative would be LOTS of alternatives. Whole new system. Abolish tenure in favor of other forms of job security

I am not here for the bureaucracy police today. Please don't well actually me. My honest take is that tenure shd also be abolished because it is NOT WORKING. We need bigger, more generous forms of protection and security--not least because as we're seeing tenure doesn't mean much security. Not now!

Wikipedia is not at all like generative AI slop, and it is *most specifically* unlike slop in the very features that make it useful and reliable — that it is authored by people who take responsibility for what they do and who both credit and point readers towards the sources they have in fact used.
