Per the Middle East Studies Association, since October 7, 76 North American academics have been fired for speaking out against the genocide in Palestine. Two-thirds of those people are non-white. 16.5% are Jewish. afi.mesana.org/resource/les...
Retaliation goes far beyond firing. Of 196 recorded incidents of employer retaliation against employees speaking out on Palestine, nearly 40% (76) resulted in termination. Retaliation that does not rise to the level of termination is an even larger phenomenon.
All categories of academic workers are at risk. Of the 162 individuals whose employment status was disclosed, 30% involved non-tenure track faculty or instructors, and 36% were tenured.
People of color are disproportionately affected. Of the 134 cases recorded in the AFI database in which respondents’ identification is known, two-thirds were people of color: 30% SWANA; 10.5% Black; and 27% other POC. Additionally, 16.5% identify as Jewish. More than half of those targeted whose gender is known are women. Such retaliation compounds the abuse of already racist and sexist work environments.

Following along @mzakharuk.bsky.social's reread of @juliaserano.bsky.social's "Whipping Girl". Barely any cis people understand the rampant rape culture inherent to the medical gatekeeping of trans healthcare. These "professionals" know the power they hold over trans people and often abuse it.
> In the 1970s, Suzanne J. Kessler and Wendy McKenna came across several instances in which gatekeepers were rather blatant about this practice: “A clinician during a panel session on transsexualism at the 1974 meeting of the American Psychological Association said that he was more convinced of the femaleness of a male-to-female transsexual if she was particularly beautiful and was capable of evoking in him those feelings that beautiful women generally do. Another clinician told us that he uses his own sexual interest as a criterion for deciding whether a transsexual is really the gender she/he claims.”

I notice that everything the press doesn’t like is “social contagion” now, except for the escalating crankery of the press, which is an organisation of a couple of thousand people mostly concentrated in one city, who largely all know each other - one thing that definitely *is* social contagion.

The history of software is one of feminising and devaluing women's labour as nerdy, clerical, following specifications and requirements determined by men, and then valorising a presumed male hacker figure who disrupts and manfully disregards the needs of those relying on custodial maintenance work.

a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

Mani Dunlop seemed very weird in her focus on theatre. Girl, you want excitement? In this economy? We are tired. The country wants a man who stands very still and looks with anger at Christopher Luxon like he hates and disdains him, because according to polling this is highly relatable.

they see nothing wrong with giving themselves the prerogative to forgive someone else's rape, bc the bodies of women are the property of society, & by society we mean men, so how she feels about it is irrelevant. people break the rules all the time, isn't it unfair to be so draconian about it?

Primate Profile #96: François' langur Living in limestone forest habitats, these langurs spend ~40% of their lives on rocks rather than in trees. They move through their habitat mostly using a combination of swinging and climbing, but up to 10% can be purely free-fall! Image: N Panda (iNat.org)
A mother and baby François' langur sitting in sparse brush. The mother has her arms around the juvenile. Both are looking at the camera, the baby with its mouth open.

These monkeys are black all over with a large triangular head crest, long tails with a tuft at the end, and large white sideburns down the sides of their face. The juvenile's sideburns have not yet turned fully white and are more of a dirty grey colour, while the black fur on top of the head is still brown. Infants are born bright orange, after which they fade to brown and then black as they age.

Our biology teacher told us maybe a dozen times that we "didn't want to lose our virginity in the back of a ford escort". It was maybe a class signifier fail (?)(US origin teacher, bogan NZ teenagers) but we thought it was suspiciously specific, and that was much more off-putting.
