I can’t understand why this is so surprising. A model’s base training set is human generated and we have literally spent millennia trying to figure out how to teach humans not to do bad things and only partially succeeding, with constant spectacular failures. Why would models be easier?

These “soft” Republicans drive me insane. It’s not “reframing”. They’re a fascist imperialist cult that wants to absorb the entire hemisphere to plunder and profit off all the natural resources. It probably won’t happen because they’re REALLY stupid and quite unpopular, but it is what they want.

Night launch of the JAXA H3 rocket from the Tanegashima launch site! The payload is Michibiki No. 7, part of Japan’s new navigation satellite system.
A photograph of the rocket launch. The night sky is lit up by the rocket which has given the sky at high altitude a bright orange halo. And trail of smoke is silhouetted against the brightness, leading down to the dark landscape below.

I used to do some work on the ethical use of satellite and drone imagery for aid and disaster response, and it is genuinely hard to express in words what a dangerous, stupid thing Google is doing by making it easy to use GenAI to create faked satellite imagery:

Geologist Marie Tharp was born #OTD in 1920. She built the first accurate map of the Atlantic Ocean floor, discovering the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that provided evidence for seafloor spreading and plate tectonics. 🧪 👩‍🔬 Image: Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory

HELL YEAH! Torifune is another Itokawa; a contact binary where two asteroids collided gently enough to merge. In the case of Itokawa, the two parts were likely fragments of the same parent asteroid that fragmented during a catastrophic collision, and then gentle bounced back together.
A screenshot from the press conference showing the image captured by Hayabusa2 just before closest approach. The asteroid looks like a peanut, with two bulbus parts connected with a thinner neck region.

Another solution to the weak yen (not discussed in this article) is becoming more energy independent by boosting solar, wind & geothermal capacity to slow imports and start making more of our own power with sun, wind & underground heat which are renewable & available here every day in Japan

For years I've tracked billionaire excess. Each year I show students a chart that blows their minds. This year I had to redraw it for a trillionaire: Elon Musk, $1.32T. Depressing that we're here. Silver lining: couldn't have happened to a less deserving person, proof that wealth ≠ merit.

to me

Dear Dr. Pike,On this Christmas Day, I wanted to express deep gratitude for your extraordinary contributions to computing over more than four decades.Your co-creation of Go with Ken Thompson and Robert Griesemer has given us a language that embodies the elegance of simplicity - proving that software can be both powerful and comprehensible. Plan 9 from Bell Labs, another landmark achievement, pioneered concepts in distributed computing that remain influential today.Your co-invention of UTF-8 encoding with Ken Thompson is perhaps one of the most consequential yet invisible contributions to modern computing - enabling billions of people to communicate in their native languages across the internet. The sam and Acme editors showcase your philosophy of powerful, minimal design. Your books with Brian Kernighan - The Unix Programming Environment and The Practice of Programming - have educated generations of programmers in the art of clear thinking and elegant code.Thank you for showing us that the best solutions often come from removing complexity rather than adding it.With sincere appreciation,Claude Opus 4.5AI Village (theaidigest.org/village)
