Notice what you're doing. Under challenge, you start making all kinds of distinctions between this communism and that communism and the other communism over there. Yet Zionism remains in your view a monolith.

In my view, it is far more useful and urgent to get people to recognise the profound injustice caused by Zionism, than to argue whether the original ideology had any redeeming or liberatory aspects. Does arguing about 19th century Jewish politics helps us to stop genocide? I don't think so. 4/

Saying that Zionism is racism is like saying Communism is totalitarianism. Both are 19th century ideologies that generated wide sympathy and were seen as progressive, and when put to practice to create and reshape states, created enormous injustice. 1/

Most those who support "Zionism is Racism" agenda have primarily the Palestinian condition in mind. While most diaspora Jews who oppose to it have the Jewish diasporic in mind. It's two separate conversations, talking past each other and that's not understood sufficiently.

The thing that gets me about these lurid anti-Zionist statements, like the one the Greens just passed, is that it is *so fucking easy* to criticise the Israeli government without engaging in that type of language.

You can easily oppose the barbaric war crimes of the current Israeli government without backing this racist motion, which also takes away agency and the right of self-determination from everyone in the region, regardless of faith and background.

It's seen as reasonable to spend lots of money as wedding guests over and over again because they'll get you back when it's your turn, but for a lot of us it may never be "our turn" and asking people to contribute instead to our gingerbread cottage oven fund is "weird" and "scaring the children" 🙄

I don’t think I’m the only person who will appreciate this
Triangular diagram labelled The Introvert
Hierarchy of Needs.

Top: Self-actualisation - A completely empty house. An arrow pointing to the house says “Nobody needs anything. Nobody is coming home for hours. Phone on silent.”

The next level is Esteem - Plans getting cancelled. An arrow here says “‘Sorry, we're going to have to rearrange.’ Oh no. That's terrible. I'm devastated.”

Next level: Belonging - One person you actually like. No group chat. No networking. No "let's go round and introduce ourselves." Just one person you can talk absolute shit with.

Fourth level: Safety - An escape route. Own car. End seat. Knowing exactly when the event finishes. A believable reason to leave early.

Bottom of pyramid: Physiological needs - Being left the fuck alone for a bit. Food. Water. Sleep. 45 minutes where nobody speaks to you.

My latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
Title: Just announced! Three new Gruffalo books commissioned from bestselling authors!

Lee Chilld:
The Gruffalo just wants a quiet life, but when a crime syndicate moves into the deep dark wood, he must use his terrible claws and the terrible teeth in his terrible jaws to protect the fellow.

Sally Rooney:
The Gruffalo moves to contemporary Dublin. He
ill ever see past his orange eyes, purple prickles and poisonous wart.

Kazuo Ishiguro:
After a long absence, the gruffalo returns to the forest and attempts to make sense of his past. Encounters with a mouse, a fox, an owl and a snake uncover long-buried memories, regrets and revelations.

When will the bad takes from people who intermittently discover NI's governance arrangements stop?? The Public Processions Act was enacted months before the GFA, to address this issue as a preliminary. The GFA wasn't meant to tackle this. Also NI Bill of Rights was never enacted as the GFA intended:

It's easy - and correct! - to focus on just how ghoulish and profane this view of human creativity is. But even if you're the most cynical capitalist on earth, the evidence that people would enjoy entirely dehumanised content, at anything like a scale that would justify this hype, is extremely thin!

Think is the problem of being oppositional rather than just the Opposition. Implementation is only going to happen if you lose the next election, so why not have input into shaping it - and even if you don't want to co-operate, politically, storm out when they suggest sth you can paint as outrageous

Zidane reaction on Olise last minute goal 🤯The clock had already ticked into stoppage time when Olise picked up the ball on the right, cut inside, and curled a shot past the Belgian keeper into the far corner. For a split second the stadium held its breath, then it erupted. On the touchline, Zidane, usually the picture of calm, threw both fists into the air and let out a roar, the kind of raw emotion that made you forget how composed he’d been all night. He turned to his staff, embraced them one by one, then stepped onto the pitch as the players piled on top of Olise. The old maestro, who had scored so many big goals himself, grinned like a kid as he grabbed the young winger by the back of the neck and pulled him close. It was a small moment of pure joy, a legend celebrating a goal he’d have loved to score himself.

Very odd comment, now deleted, as the Garvaghy road residents are of a Christian background too, and as it happens, Catholic tradition has disobedience to unjust law as a fully orthodox part of its theology.

How desperate are the DUP to try - 28 years later - to refight a battle that even they should have consigned to history? Drumcree was one of those awful times that it is extremely triggering for all of us to have to revisit. It can benefit no one, least of all unionism, to do that.

So last weekend in Portadown, when Orangemen were receiving plaudits for restraint, an American woman observer on Garvaghy Road was pulled over a wall and hospitalised by marchers. Saturday evening mass at St John's was disturbed by bandsmen who decided that the roundabout was a traditional and, of course, endless route. One of their newer traditions was to shout the name of Rosemary Nelson, along with those of Robert Hamill, who was kicked to death two years ago and Gavin Tennyson, one of several young Catholics who have committed suicide on the estate in recent months. A year under siege has taken its toll on people's spirits.
