So curious that such a wealthy man never posts anything that indicates that he enjoys or is even aware of what virtually everyone appreciates— scenes from nature, pet dog or cat, praise for a movie, music, a book (but doubt that he reads); pride in a friend's or relative's accomplishment; condolences for someone who has died; pleasure in sports, acclaim for a favorite team; references to history. In fact he seems totally uneducated, uncultured. The poorest persons on Twitter may have access to more beauty & meaning in life than the

Check out Justice Eddins’ complete repudiation of the Roberts Court here. It’s worth reading in full. It’s quite brave—and exceedingly rare—for a sitting judge to speak so candidly and scathingly about SCOTUS’ partisan contortions of law, history, and fact. www.courts.state.hi.us/wp-content/u...
The Supreme Court devalues democracy. Thirty-seven state
constitutions block public funds from supporting religious
entities. Richard Schragger, Micah Schwartzman & Nelson Tebbe,
Reestablishing Religion, 92 U. Chi. L. Rev. 199, 211 (2025) .
The Court aims to federally-repeal these state constitutional
provisions.
The Court's beliefs meddle with local and state
governments. Forcing states to send public funds to religious
entities federalizes public policy. By unprincipled fiat. See
also New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass'n, Inc. v. Bruen, 597
U.S. 1 (2022) (zero to superpower).
Taxpayer funds now flow to religious institutions. So, the
government collects money from nonbelievers (under the threat of
jail), and uses some of it to support religion. And since not
all religions will receive public funds, the government forces
minority faiths to support other faiths, or else.
The Court twists text, history, purpose, precedent, and
public meaning to offend the First Amendment's character-of-
government structure and the Constitution's separate sovereignty
structure.
As it steamrolls both, the Court says nothing about church-
state separation and federalism principles. The Court's
nevermind stance to the structural features of the Constitution
"has unfolded with little engagement with, and occasional

insomniac thoughts from last night
insomniac thoughts:
people like mcardle, yglesias, singal, etc., truly believe they are "sensible centrists" and not the lite (or actual) conservatives that they really are. so when people on the right (and far right) treat them well, and when people on the left mock them, they look at it as evidence that the right is "nicer" and "more welcoming" than those mean purist children on the left, instead of realizing that they are simply simpatico.
this is also true of the "heterodox thinkers" and the "i'm politically tribeless" tribe, and it's why all these folks are totally comfortable at the nazi bar but can't abide a space like bsky, which while not an echo chamber, does obvious skew left, and by this fact alone, exposes where they all sit on the ideological spectrum. (it's also why they will extend seemingly endless grace to people like richard hanania, chris rufo, and jimmy concepts.)

I’m not much of a theologian but I do not believe doing this to people is forgivable www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
You never forget the sight of children starving to death, so I wish White House officials could have been with me on this trip to South Sudan, where 70 percent of nutrition assistance has come from the United States. Malnutrition is common in poor countries — more than one-fifth of young children worldwide are stunted from malnutrition — and near the Sudan-South Sudan border, I dropped in on the remote Upper Nile town of Bobonis, where many children are affected. Staff members of a nonprofit supported by U.S.A.I.D. used to visit weekly to provide an emergency high-nutrition paste to save the lives of young children with severe acute malnutrition — but that program was ended by the Trump administration last month.

So now children in the village are starving. I quickly found a half-dozen children with severe acute malnutrition and getting no help.

Fatima Abdulai, 14, held her niece, Nadia, a severely malnourished 2-year-old, and said the household has been reduced to one meal a day of sorghum mush. It was midafternoon when I met them, and nobody in the family had had a bite to eat that day, including Nadia.

“Sometimes she cries from hunger,” Fatima said. “Then we give her water to drink.”
