In @thestar.com I write about how to reimagine & continue Ford's very Trumpy, absurd & ridiculous bike lane war: don't feel lonely (there's more cyclists everyday); protests will grow (note to engineering firms & drivers); it's a culture war (facts, science & good faith don't matter). Let's go.

A gentle reminder that if we miss the 1.5°C target (and we certainly will), the next target is 1.51°C and not 2°C. We need to keep fighting. Every tonne of CO₂ emitted makes the job of future CO₂ removal harder, and every 0.01°C of temperature increase makes the world more chaotic and dangerous.
Cover from The Economist from two years ago "Say goodbye to 1.5°C; why climate policy is off target". It has a graphic of the Earth with an apple on its head, and a arrow shot through the Earth.

You can read the Ontario Superior Court's debunking of the "bike lanes belong on side streets, not main streets" argument here: Cycle Toronto et al. v. Attorney General of Ontario et al., 2025 ONSC 4397, canlii.ca/t/kdk2t

And Cycle Toronto's expert, Dr. Shoshanna Saxe, gave evidence that “there are no viable alternatives to the Bloor Street and Yonge Street cycle tracks”, and that most cyclists will not take alternative routes because they will add significant travel times. (para 178)

Bronwyn Roe @bronwynroe.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
Ontario's own expert "raised similar concerns about alternative routes, as well as lack of connectivity and safety. It noted the 'limited options for a direct and parallel route that provides access to key destinations'". (para 177)

Bronwyn Roe @bronwynroe.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
The City agrees “without bikeways on main streets, the network would be disconnected and lack connectivity to key destinations”; main streets are “full of activity, retail, essential services, community destinations, and employment hubs” and often have "shorter distances and travel times.” para 176

Bronwyn Roe @bronwynroe.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
"To the contrary ... the government itself was aware that it was 'unable to assume that cyclists would move to secondary roads, even if encouraged”, that such movement was “unknown/unlikely”, and that this was simply an issue of “messaging” for the government." (2025 ONSC 4397 at para 174)

Bronwyn Roe @bronwynroe.bsky.social · 11/08/2026
In Cycle TO's legal challenge, Ontario made this "bike lanes belong on side streets" argument. The Court found this was "unsupported by any evidence from the government that there are feasible or practical alternative routes which would be used by cyclists instead of staying on the main streets."
