WATCH: After approving another climate-killing pipeline, the government now claims it is “avoiding highly sensitive ecosystems.” Today, Elizabeth May demanded to know whether they talked to any scientists before making this deeply flawed decision.

The Green Party opposed Bill C-5 from the start. Now the Liberals want to remove one of the few limits placed on it. Bill C-5 was meant to sunset after five years, stopping its “national interest” powers from being handed to future governments. Bill C-39 erases that safeguard.
Green Party graphic on a cream background with orange and dark green text. It reads: “The Green Party opposed Bill C-5 from the start.” The graphic says Bill C-5 gave Cabinet extraordinary powers to fast-track projects it calls in the “national interest,” concentrating too much power in government, but that even Bill C-5 came with an expiry date. At the bottom is a green halftone portrait of Mark Carney in front of overlapping clock faces.Green Party graphic on a cream and orange background. Large orange text reads: “Bill C-39 removes that deadline.” It says that if the bill passes, every future government will inherit these powers, including governments with radically different priorities. Highlighted text reads: “Bill C-5 gave government too much power. Extraordinary powers should never come without an expiry date.” A large distressed “EXPIRED DATE” stamp appears across the orange lower half.

Graphic titled “More Pipelines, More Problems” over a photo of yellow oil pipelines. Text says Ottawa has designated the West Coast Oil Pipeline a “project of national interest,” putting it on the fast track. The proposed pipeline would move 1 million barrels of oil a day from Alberta to B.C.’s coast.Graphic titled “More Pipelines, More Destruction” over a photo of a wildfire burning through a forest. Text says producing another 1 million barrels of oil a day will add millions of tonnes of pollution every year, causing more extreme heat, longer wildfire seasons, more homes lost to floods and more lives lost.Graphic titled “More Pipelines, More Extinction” over a photo of a Southern Resident killer whale. Text says Ottawa rewrote the rules to override species protections for projects of “national interest.” It says Ottawa is now moving ahead with an oil terminal in the Fraser River Estuary, where 102 species are already at risk of extinction and less than 30% of habitat is left.Graphic reads: “More oil. More extinction. More destruction.” Images show oil pumpjacks and an industrial facility releasing smoke, orcas near an industrial port and a wild canid on a shoreline, followed by scenes of wildfire and flooding.
Read our statement on the collapse of the Canada-US trade negotiations:
Green Party of Canada statement graphic on the collapse of Canada-US trade negotiations. Text says Greens stand with Team Canada, affected sectors and workers, and support government action while calling for a more strategic response. It argues dollar-for-dollar retaliation is insufficient against a US economy roughly 12 times Canada’s size and says Canada should target its response where it will have the greatest impact.Green Party statement calling for strategic reserves of Canadian aluminum, potash and wood products. It says withholding resources wanted by the US could put pressure on industries in politically important districts. The statement also calls for an end to expanding fossil fuel exports to the US, greater electrification of clean steel production for other markets, and consideration of export tariffs on key Canadian resources, including energy.Final slide of the Green Party statement. Elizabeth May says these measures would strengthen Canada’s economic sovereignty and calls for Canada to move beyond an “eye for an eye” approach and fundamentally change its subservient relationship with the United States, ending with “Elbows up.” Below the quote is an illustration of three people gathered around a flowering tree and the Green Party logo.

Carney’s government wants to make endangered species protections optional when they get in the way of major projects. While Big Oil gets a shortcut, wildlife gets pushed closer to extinction.

Public safety is not an expense to trim. When governments hollow out public capacity, the consequences show up in evacuation centres, overwhelmed communities and lives put at greater risk. That is the real cost of these cuts.
Wildfire burns through a forest under heavy smoke.

Is this enough to protect your home? Ottawa is giving $34 million for climate adaptation projects. But they’re also pouring billions into the fossil fuel sector. Canadians deserve a government that stops the flow of money to the cause of this crisis.

Especially when Ottawa provided over $10.2 billion in fossil fuel subsidies and public financing last year.” Green Party logo at bottom.
