Sometimes you read a book from 1942 and discover that the past was just not that long ago. From A Time To Be Born, by Dawn Powell:
"Julian had, in fact, fallen in love with the superstition that any nontechnical worker or any uneducated human being was auto-matically endowed with a rare and incontrovertible well of wisdom. Everyday he ran interviews with truck drivers, cops, waiters, dock hands, busboys, janitors, and street cleaners, and their explana-tions of the government problems was God's own word, unless they spoiled the effect by mentioning a book or some source of documentation. Julian did not like it at all if it developed that the simple sage had been corrupted by an average education, or if he betrayed a normal interest in reading. The subjects of his research must be one-syllable little men, not articulate literates, as if lying, confusion, bigotry and corruption never came in one syllable, and in book learning alone was there sin and woe. This reverence for ignorance was apparently so deep-seated in the public, as vouched for by Little American circulation, that it seems astonishing citizens continued to support colleges and schools. It would have been logical to assume that the serious parents would raise their children to be oracles of ignorance, uncorrupted by the nuances of language, able to couch their primitive impressions in as simple a form as "Ug." "So that's why people like the Elroys are against Hitler, Vicky thought, getting angry. They would stand for any barbarism but mean birth and bad manners, and it was a cruel trick for them to make a Cinderella of the monster just by their contempt for him. How dared people like the Elroys and Julian Evanses be on our side, besmirching it with their snide reasons? Making country club of a great cause, joining it only because its membership was above reproach, its parties and privileges the most superior, its officers all the best people? Why didn't they stay on the oppressor side where they belonged and where their tastes actually were? They did in the Spanish War, and for the same reasons that they switched over in this war. Vicky was aware of a wave of indignation bringing unexpected strength to her spirits.

"You don't object to cannibalism, then," she said. "It's the table manners they use, isn't it, Mrs. Elroy?”"

But we all know it isn't one, and can't be one. Los Angeles and Utah aren't equivalent destinations for free agent talent for reasons the NBA can't control. To say nothing of teams in states with no state income tax.

In one respect, this is very obviously not ideal. But in another, perhaps more important respect, it is *the* ideal.

It doesn't feel all that comfortable, as a Gotham fan looking at the remaining schedule. I don't know if San Diego will ever drop points again.

All the attacking talent in Gotham's side; it is sometimes mistifying that they don't score more. But the goals they score are beautiful.

Seems to me as if purely by accident you should be able to get 1,000 people to a professional soccer game at a very accessible venue on a pleasant Saturday night. And yet
Fotmob shows tonight's attendance as 965 people

Shout out to the 10 or 12 Pittsburgh fans who made the trip and sang the whole 90, though. They had the worst seats in the house and a better time than anyone else.
The gap between the Pittsburgh fans in the "home plate" seats on the far right of the image, and the field, not pictured.

Disappointing, but also imo a little baffling that Brooklyn FC haven't managed to draw much of anybody out to games at Coney Island. They haven't lacked for marketing, but the Cosmos were drawing significantly bigger crowds here 10 years ago.
Wide-angle view of the field and stands for tonight's Brooklyn FC match vs. Pittsburgh. Attendance is sparse at the 7,000 seat venue, with the caveat that a couple dozen home supporters are just off to the left of this photo.

I would also argue that a lot of the cultural shifts wouldn't have happened if people saw a feasible route to change through the normal political avenues. But Trump was president and no cities actually would defund the police, so everyone took on personal matters as if they held political importance
