Councils should have staff who just go around and sort out minor problems they see. Bag of rubbish - collect it. Street sign a bit wonky - straighten it. Overgrown weeds - pull them. All those small jobs. They're the things that make a place better to live if they're resolved.

This goes for left Vs right here in UK too. The fundamental question that divides us all.

England is a made up thing. It has no basis in the ineluctable laws of nature. Its extent is defined by Edward II getting his arse handed to him. Athelstan conquering York. The Welsh of Cumbria were incorporated, the Welsh of Gwynedd were not. It is a political idea, an aspiration - not taxonomy.

This chart published by the Economics Laboratory, shows that the UK social spending is 23% of GDP, covers NHS, social security and support services. It is a useful rebutal to neoliberals calling for cuts to the NHS, state pension and other benefits. www.linkedin.com/posts/charto...

I think once black clad men are interfering with rescues at sea, we are past "legitimate concerns". Once they're attacking boats, and risking the lives of everyone on board, it's just thuggery. The Home Secretary's statement is on the side of criminals. There's no other way to read it.

I want my country back. By that, I mean a country where I would be confident that a thug who livestreamed himself stabbing an RNLI dingy on an active operation would a) Be universally condemned b) Be swiftly arrested, put on trial and if found guilty, face many years in jail. I miss that country.

Lots of talk of growth ahead of the Budget, as if it were a baroque puzzle. Our problem is basic. It's that we no longer support the things which facilitate growth: Europe, immigration, higher education, tax simplification, policy stability. These are all choices and could stop making them anytime.

It's pretty damn impressive how much ground Mayor Mamdani has been able to cover after only nine months in office on a wide range of basic quality-of-life issues in NYC. I was reading through the numbers this morning, and they're kinda astonishing. (thread)

... mutually exclsusive? There is a name for being genuinely worried that foreign, dark-skinned people are dangerous. In fact, all phobias are genuinely felt. It's part of the challenge. But "genuine" does not equal "legitimate". And it just does not seem a great strategy for a state broadcaster...

The balaclava blackshirted thugs are a result of a decade of politicians, tabloids and the broadcast media telling racists they have "legitimate concerns." The normalisation of actual fascism rhetoric and action has led to this and is a far greater "legitimate concern" than any migrant on a boat.

Govt, politicians, rightwing media… you decided that Brexit meant you needed to exclusively appeal to a stereotypical “red wall”/“left behind” voter who you insisted was anti-immigration because it suited you to pin their disaffection onto immigrants rather than onto you…

Why hasn’t the government condemned this in the strongest terms? Why no reassurance to the public that this is being taken seriously, that they have no intention of letting organised fascist thugs shut down key infrastructure, and that we should expect arrests and charges to follow?

The UK needs houses the Government could hire 200,000-300,000 to build them. The UK needs reservoirs and Wind Turbines, that's another 250,000 jobs. If you want to create jobs it is very easy, and these projects will be HUGELY profitable for the Government.

Climate is a pattern, and the pattern has changed. = Climate Change
Graphic reading, “The difference between ‘There used to be hot summers too.’ and climate crisis.” Below is a temperature-anomaly chart showing mostly blue, cooler-than-average years in the earlier record, shifting dramatically toward sustained red, warmer-than-average years in recent decades. Occasional earlier red bars are labelled “These were hot summers,” while the sustained cluster of increasingly warm recent years is labelled “This is climate change.”

The only good thing about climate change is that I'll get to see the people who post laughing emojis and shout "it's called summer/winter" at apocalyptic weather stories, proven wrong and have to either admit it, or continue the act as they starve to death/melt/burn. I'll take my satisfaction there

Look at this graph. The share of national income going to the richest 10 percent was lowest (and share to lower 90 percent highest) when union membership was at its highest. As unions have weakened, inequality has widened. This is why we must build back union power.

If the England team were a book. Or a film, or a play ...people would pay good money to experience such drama, tragedy and such an emotional rollercoaster. It would win all the oscars, and Emmys, Grammy's, Tony's, and booker prizes. No competition. Soak it in people. That's some good shit
