One of the more depressing things about this century is that Merkel doing the humane thing, the Christian thing, the common sense thing, what we’re supposed to do as humans, did more to fuel this radical right movement than anything else. And what that says about humanity today is depressing

Still, I think it was a good sign that these campaigns were able to pursue pretty unified messaging despite a deck stacked against them in many ways. If this issue endures beyond the 19th - and it will - Phillips is absolutely correct that we must unify and improve our messaging and ground game.

I think Lukaszuk deserves a little more credit for getting my resoundingly apolitical neighbors putting up pro-Canadian yard signs and encouraging others to vote to stay. The No To The Nine campaign has done crucial work mobilizing the vote, but I think Forever Canadian also put the work in.

An interesting article, worth reading for a breakdown of the federalist side and a good critique of Ottawa‘s messaging (or lack thereof). I do think it’s convenient that the progressive campaigns both scored A (one of which I’d never heard of) while Forever Canadian somehow limped off with a C-.

Canada is the spiritual home of the mining scam in part because of a proud history of guys pointing at assays showing super reserves of chromite or something in Je-Me-Pèle-Les-Miches in the ass-end of northern Quebec and going “c’mon, it’s just semi-Arctic conditions, how hard can one mine be?”

An Arctic “mineral rush” is one of the great mirages of the 21st Century. I found it annoying when trotted out to justify monomaniacal Canadian focus on Arctic security, but never expected Trump’s brainworms would twist it into a fixation with Greenland.

Once again we see that they can put this narrative down and pick it up again whenever they like. It may vanish from the headlines from time to time, but the overall trend is increasingly normalizing annexation rhetoric from Trump, and by extension normalizing it in Republican discourse.

We don’t talk about the fact the Russians murdered between 5 and 30% of an entire city’s prewar inhabitants and we don’t talk about it because the Russians kill any journalist or NGO who tries to get close enough to count the bodies. Yet, they still get the cop passive voice in these fucking rags.

Taiwan is the one under the gun here and like everyone else it needs to find ways to buy time and get what it can out of the U.S. while finding alternative options. Loudly signalling that they no longer have or even want American backing only flags vulnerabilities which they will not be able to fix.
150
Robert Borden Stan Account @bordenstan.bsky.social · 11h
I guess the question here is whether the current Taiwanese position is “betting the farm” and frankly I don’t think it is. They have been working to diversify and build up sovereign capability for years, and it’s hard to understand what they would even achieve with a “decisive break”.

Robert Borden Stan Account @bordenstan.bsky.social · 13h
Ukraine has also done all of this and people understand why it still works to maintain what US support it can, which is why it would be incredibly weird to use the Starlink thing to talk about how everyone in Kyiv is going to death camps if they don‘t stop buying PAC-3s right this second.

Robert Borden Stan Account @bordenstan.bsky.social · 13h
Okay, but the thing is that Taiwan is demonstrably not ignoring this and has been hedging and working to build up domestic capabilities for years (far longer than we have), so it would accomplish nothing by trading crucial if uncertain US support for essentially borderline autarky.

I think Chen and the Taiwanese probably know that better than a random Westerner, which is why brandishing that existential risk in their face for not emotionally satisfying us by randomly blowing up their key alliance to no immediate benefit seems more than a little ugly.

Robert Borden Stan Account @bordenstan.bsky.social · 13h
Yes, it’s very true that the U.S. is an increasingly unreliable and erratic partner, but there’s not much point in finger-wagging at Taipei for being blindsided in the same way as the entire Western alliance system, nor does Taiwan have any good alternatives. This is the reality for many countries.
2472
Robert Borden Stan Account @bordenstan.bsky.social · 13h
It is not especially classy to wave the Uyghur Genocide at a Taiwanese security expert like a cudgel, but also, I don’t see why everyone frames Taiwan’s position as blind trust or enthusiasm for the GOP rather than the reality of a country having to navigate a vital but increasingly murky alliance.

I think Taiwan is pretty clearly already willing to support a domestic arms industry and maintain a well-armed conscript force that exercises regularly. But there are flatly limits to Taiwan’s ability to go it alone that I think you are too hasty to dismiss.

Robert Borden Stan Account @bordenstan.bsky.social · 14h
Okay, but you can see how just openly breaking ties with the U.S. would be a massive invitation to military action compared to the ambiguity of possible U.S. support, right? That’s not an abstract thing, it is concretely yoked to Taiwanese ability to maintain deterrence.

Unsure on that score, but South Korea‘s defence industry has limits in its capabilities and (as its relationship with Ukraine shows) is not always a reliable supplier of aid in situations where Seoul fears eroding its own stocks or otherwise prioritizes its own situation vis a vis the DPRK.

No European navy is remotely equipped for a fight in the Pacific within the next 10 years. Taiwan has worked to develop alternative partnerships in other areas but simply creating gaping capability gaps they have no means to fix will not help them become more secure or sovereign.

With respect, this is a wicked problem which makes Canada’s own strategic dilemmas look incredibly mild by comparison. Taiwan cannot pivot to partners that cannot help defend it against an immediate threat. Uncertain U.S. support is still worth more than functionally worthless EU support.
