It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

Yes exactly! I just worry that kids who need a lot of support and focused attention from human teachers are going to be increasingly pushed onto using AI, widening inequalities across education as a whole.

I’m sincerely not anti-tech; my background and expertise is in assistive tech. But learning is repeated practice with consistent, accurate feedback. With gen AI, you have to know the subject well to be sure of accuracy. It’s an expert tool, not something to promote learning.

I’m prof who teaches mostly pre-service elementary + special educators. I’ve seen: -have kids use chatbots for research -prompts to use AI for writing + art on school laptops -AI to make songs for young children - AI teaching endorsements - AI making older tools worse

the truth is that most of the people making decisions about AI in education are not carefully looking at studies and thoughtfully thinking about it. they’re going off of how shiny the tech looks and the media framing of it. so media framing that highlights its dangers is v. helpful

if you’re not in education, you don’t know how much generative AI has been pushed on teachers and students alike. this is not the most well-designed study by a long shot, but frankly any pushback at all against using AI in PK-12 classrooms is desperately needed.

It’s back in the ether, so - NEVER give honey to infants. Honey is awesome. But it can contain dormant spores of the bacteria that causes botulism. In adults with good immune systems, this isn’t really a problem. But babies can get very sick and even die.
