I didn't watch Whedon, but I have a longstanding "oh shit, the audience is getting [happy thing], somebody's going to die" that I am beyond sick of. It cues emotional distancing for me.

This might be helpful in learning more about fragrance and/or chemical sensitivities Part of the issue is companies don't have to divulge the individual ingredients in "fragrances" (and there are 4,000+ ingredients in that category) So it's very hard to tell what specifically one reacts to

These are storied magazines. Authors have long careers entwined with them. Some of the best editors of my lifetime worked there. I know authors who were in tears getting acceptances there. MRM turning them into a content farm for rights is repugnant.

Writer Beware is a great resource for looking up potentially problematic publishers. They published this updated history of MRM’s rights grabs yesterday. Their history lesson on MRM will be better than mine.

"If you create a character in that story and they make a movie about them, you don’t get a dime." Not true. DC pays living creators a bonus when characters they created wind up in a movie, even if they aren't the lead or title character. But you don't have rights to use the character elsewhere,

Recently, Must Read Magazines (MRM) bought three of the most legendary SFF magazines: Analog, Asimov’s, and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. MRM immediately started changing the contracts to try to take more rights from authors without paying for them.

Work For Hire. This is where the publisher buys the story from you. This is common in media tie-in writing. DC Comics hires you to write a Batman story, and they own everything about it. If you create a character in that story and they make a movie about them, you don’t get a dime.

When the magazine accepts and publishes your story, you still own the story. You have just used up the exclusive first publication rights. You can’t sell those again (without doing some fraud). (Don’t do some fraud.)

I realize the size of my need is big, and I think the most likely way I'm going to meet it is with many donations of various sizes, but probably especially many small donations. So far, GoFundMe tells me that while 78 people have donated, 1k people have viewed the fundraiser.

MMR is 97% effective. BUT: - Some may not mount a robust enough immune response to vax for a variety of reasons - Protection CAN wane if there's been a major immune disruption, though this is rare - Most pertinent: intense, prolonged exposure to someone with measles can supersede protection
