Oh, for the record, of the people who parked in front of the cafe. The number of them who actually came in and patronized was a big ol goose egg. Zero, zilcho, not a one. This, in spite of the roguishly charming barista working the counter.

This is the part many Americans -- including the Bezosites at the Washington Post -- don't understand. Canadians don't see this just as a Trump thing. It's that America elected him twice, and the second time with an even bigger mandate. The problem we're addressing is America, not Trump.

A story of cause and effect: Last November, Ontario banned cities from using speed safety cameras to issue tickets. Reckless speeding immediately surged in Toronto, Ottawa, Guelph, and cities throughout the province. A 🧵 about my latest in Bloomberg (gift link)

What Happens When Speed Cameras Get Shut Off
In 2025, Ontario banned automated traffic enforcement. Now the number of drivers exceeding the speed limit has surged, according to traffic data.

This city is just this meme on every issue. The only acceptable place for young folks & new neighbours in our city according to NIMBYs is cramming into basement suites or on slow buses from surrey or Langley. We will never solve this country's housing crisis and traffic will just get worse.
towers we need "Noooo don't build Manhattan style housing like Paris!!! They'll hold the same amount of people if we spread it out instead of just densifying existing apartment areas and ruining their character"

"Oh so we'll permit property owners to gradually redevelop their land to form new human-scale neighbourhood streets where the walk-ups and sho the frequent transit nsit already exlsts just like shops in lo Dunbar village etc., rather than tall towers on top of stations"

Everyone loves large planning exercises like the Vancouver Plan. But when it's time for implementation people get cold feet. Even though the Villages is probably the mildest portion of the overall plan. Will the Vancouver Plan suffer the same fate as City Plan in the 1990s and just fizzle?

In opposing the Villages Plan, Vancouver mayor Ken Sim’s ABC party repeatedly seems to conflate legalizing more apartments with *forcing* people to build apartments on their property or something?
What you do with your home should be your choice.
Your ABC Vancouver team has listened to residents and directed staff to cancel the proposed Villages Plan after concerns were raised about mandatory zoning in some neighbourhoods.
We believe Vancouver needs more housing-but it must be done thoughtfully. That means adding homes where they make sense while respecting existing neighbourhoods and the people who have worked hard and invested their lives into their homes.
No homeowner should feel that City Hall is deciding the future of their property without their voice being heard.
We heard your concerns loud and clear and have directed staff to stop and end the plan immediately.
Our goal is simple: build more housing, protect property rights, and keep Vancouver a city of diverse neighbourhoods—not one-size-fits-all

Credit to @lucymaloney.bsky.social for being the only Vancouver city councillor (!?!?) to vote in favour of the Villages Plan to legalize medium-sized apartments in a large number of neighbourhoods across the city. Otherwise a major disappointment for the city.

Both totally unnecessary and extremely funny that the Guardian has an interactive graphic for you to change the color of the US flag's blue to the color of the Reflecting Pool from 8 to 19 June and counting
Screenshot of the article's graphic, showing color swatches derived from the Earthcam archive, illustration the color of the reflecting pool calibrated against satellite imagery, from 8 June to 19 June 2026. I chose yesterday, 19 June, so it rendered the US American flag with a green hue instead of blue.
