I think of Ujjal Dosanjh's failed BC NDP premiership the same way I think of Mark Messier's failed Vancouver Canucks captaincy. Factually true, but brief and best forgotten. #bcpoli

The elephant in the room
Alberta separatists have gone to D.C. offering fresh water and oil in exchange for American support – and Republican operatives have provided tactical assistance inside the province

Both papers have been op-ed sewers for years: Sue-Ann Levy lying about refugee hotels before someone tried to set fire to one, Joe Warmington toying with anti-vaxx stuff, Brian Lilley supporting MAGA, Tristin Hopper and Terry Newman getting really, really weird. But this feels like escalation

So this month the Toronto Sun published a piece about the Allison Inquiry that called vaccines "a crime against humanity at worst" and demanded arrests, and the National Post published a piece deeming Avi Lewis not just an enemy but a danger to Jewish people, with a thinly coded appeal to violence.

After five months delivering for DoorDash, Kara received an automated email telling her she had been deactivated for being late too many times. She begged them not to take away her only income. The response came back: "You have reached an email that is not in use."

This story brought me back to Kara, one of the mothers in my book, There Is No Place for Us. She was homeless with her four kids while driving for DoorDash. They had to pee in bottles so bathroom stops wouldn't make her late. After gas, she earned $6.50 an hour—75 cents less than the minimum wage.

The always-interesting @thismagazine.bsky.social gave me my first magazine cover story when I was 21 back in 1981. I've since written for 40+ magazines. Young writers should try to make the most of this opportunity.
Cover of ThisMagazine dated December 1981-January 1992. Reddish cover illustration shows a man in a leather jacket holding a glue brush and posting a broadside reading "Post No Bills." The image is reproduced on the broadside he is posting. The cover line reads: Tom Hawthorn, Free Speech in Vancouver." A headline for a secondary story reads: "Myrna Kostash, The Rape Issue in Crisis. The cover price is $1.50.

One reason why the National Book Awards didn’t have a lot of nonwhite nominees in the mid century was because immigration law kept out most nonwhite people until 1965, and Black people were under segregation. What we see now is at least partly the result of greater competition.
