What happens to a dog when its owner can’t leave hospital? | Ranjana Srivastava
Our relationships with pets matter to wellbeing. But concern for an animal’s welfare can also become a practical barrier to healthcare “Doctor, do you know I have a little dog?” My team exchanges a glance. It’s my turn today. Continue reading...

Denis Healey on David Owen
Healey kept a shelf of Spitting Image puppets as latex mementoes of his turbulent political life - among them Margaret Thatcher, Michael Foot, Neil Kinnock and David Owen. As he picked up the Owen puppet and squeezed it to make it squeak, I quoted Owen's view that when Healey stood for the Labour leadership in 1980 he “didn't have the guts to take on the left wing of the party”. “That's absolute bollocks," snorted Healey. “David Owen was a very self-centred person. He was good-looking, he was intelligent, he had immense charm and all these presents were given to him by the good fairy and then the bad fairy came along and tapped him on the shoulder and said, '... but you'll be a shit.”

This is a photo of some rocks and sand. It was taken earlier today, with a camera 247,000,000 km away. It was taken on Mars. And now you're looking at it on your screen.
Dusty, red rocks, and red soil. Darker soil in the middle of the image marks where one of the rocks has been displaced.

This is a JWST view of the galaxy cluster MACS J0454.1-0300, the bright, glowing yellow features, which is a vast set of galaxies about 8 billion lightyears away. The orange, smeared features are gravitationally distorted views of much, much farther galaxies. Blue galaxies are closer to us.

This is gravitational lensing. Where the a bunch of galaxies are so, so massive they distort the fabric of spacetime itself, and bend the light from background galaxies billions of lightyears more distant.
From the source: "A massive galaxy cluster, made of many golden elliptical galaxies with the largest, brightest one in the centre. Heavily distorted orange galaxies appear all around the cluster, the largest concentrated in a large arc around the cluster's centre; these are images of very distant galaxies, created by gravitational lensing. A few galaxies are large and bluish-white in colour; bright, nearby stars are the same colour."

Email us at changebydegrees@theguardian.com Cars are a major household expense and source of emissions, but some trips are too onerous or inconvenient for public transport. Owning a car can be expensive. Australians spend about 15% of their household income on transport, according to the Australian Automobile Association. Insurance, registration, servicing and roadside assistance alone can cost about $8,000 per year. Continue reading...

In panel one we see Sarah, the protagonist, lying in bed with the lights out. She says, "Is everyone ready for sleep?"
In panel two we see a brain, heart, and stomach. They say, "Yes!" "Yup!" and "Yep!"
In panel three we see a bladder, squirming. A speech panel says "Bladder?"
In panel four the bladder looks up. It says, weakly, "I don't know".
