On Thursday a remarkable woman won a by-election. On Friday a remarkable woman won the Nobel Peace Prize. The coverage has overwhelming been focused on the men who lost. It's 2026. Yet still.

For the kids too. I've got year 8s with real maths and reading confidence barriers telling me they 'failed' sats. I look up their ks2 data and they got 96 or something. We then do a lesson on standardised scores and 'average'.

Often that gets responded to with anger I find. I always try to call it out and question it, but sometimes I don't want a fight. Which is weak of me, but the queue at Tesco isn't necessarily the place!

I was trying to reassure myself that my then 2 year old, would probably still be able to do all the great things her dad and I did with our EU citizenship, because we'd be back in by the time she was a young adult.

I think it would be nice to have some way of 'measuring' receptive language skills in early primary. Plenty of time to work on developing it at that stage, and it feeds into so much/everything else. But assessing formally would be impossible, and you'd have to actually do something with the info.

Does your child act as if they are driven by a motor? Or something like that. A mad question. Loads of kids seem motorised - it's that glorious energy they have!

England is a made up thing. It has no basis in the ineluctable laws of nature. Its extent is defined by Edward II getting his arse handed to him. Athelstan conquering York. The Welsh of Cumbria were incorporated, the Welsh of Gwynedd were not. It is a political idea, an aspiration - not taxonomy.

This is irritating and comes over as out of touch middle-class hand wringing. The problem we have with school dinners is portion size. Noticeably declined over the last ten years. Make sure they have enough to eat before we fuss about what. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Here’s Kati Karikó, whose Nobel Prize winning work on mRNA technology saved THE WORLD, thanking the world’s educators. 🥹
‘It was the work of teachers that allowed this child of two laborers in postwar communist Hungary to understand the world... and then, in her own way, to help change it.

One doesn't grow up in an agricultural community-or, for that matter, become a biologist—without developing a healthy appreciation for seeds. Seeds are potential. They are promise. They are sustenance. Seeds are the difference between a bleak future and a bountiful one. Planting a seed is, in every case, an act of conviction, and of hope.

So thank you to my own teachers. Thank you to educators everywhere. You are planting seeds.’

And if they want people to be left to drown, or somehow dispatched in another way (clearly horrendous), are they going to be the people doing it? Or are they going to ask other people to do it for them? I'm not sure I want an answer.

There are more variations in the order of a deck of 52 playing cards than there are atoms on Earth. If you shuffle a deck of cards really well, that combination has almost certainly never existed in the whole of human history.

Some outcomes are bigger than politics.
Graphic with a blue background and the headline “Cleaner air. Healthier lungs.” At the top is the Mayor of London logo. A photograph shows two children running along the Thames with Tower Bridge in the background.

Text below reads: “A landmark study by Queen Mary University of London found that, following the introduction of the ULEZ, lung growth in children in Central London accelerated, helping them catch up with children outside the capital.”

At the bottom, the source reads: “Source: thelancet.com/journals/lanpub/article/PIIS2468-2667(26)00163-5/fulltext”

We were dictated to though, it was a one size fits all approach. Lots of teachers I knew wanted rotas of smaller classes, for all year groups, but EY and KS1 was prioritised. This meant my year 3 and 4s didn't go back to school until September. 'Sir' Gavin Williamson, pah.

Staff in schools throughout but not on the list for priority vaccination. Made us realise how we were not valued, despite keeping many communities 'going' for months. Not sure I'm over that.

So many kids struggle with her books. They are long books with small font and convoluted story lines. By year 6, someone interested will already have read it (introduced to her by her books being on the school curriculum), or already be uninterested. Voucher would be a good idea.

Another interesting statistic. Between 1980 and 1999, 35°C was reached just 5 times. It was rare & exceptional. Between 2000-2020 we reached 35°C 18 times. Between 2020-2025 we reached it 23 times. The same number in 5 years than we achieved in 40 years. Talk about a step change.
