I took an overnight train from Milan to Sicily, and the train drove onto a ferry, we all got off and enjoyed the boat, and then the train drove off the ferry.
Two train sections, one each along the length of the photo, both inside a ferry boat with a blue floor and white walls. There are yellow sections on the floor indicating safe areas to walk and highlighting the rails integrated into the floor. The trains are close together at the prow of the boat, with daylight glowing between the trains where they almost meet. Photo taken from the deck of a boat, with a large open area to the floor below. A navy train with a red stripe has a "comfort" logo in white showing a person laying down. The floor under the train is blue with bright yellow markings. The battery on top of another train section it in the foreground. Water and islands are visible beyond the boat.

One of the very best from Clickhole
From Clickhole's "Incredible! We Asked These Astronauts What It’s Like To Be In Space," Barry Wilmore: You never know true beauty until you see Earth from space, or true terror until you hear someone knocking on the space station door from outside. You look through the porthole and see an astronaut, but all your crew is inside and accounted for. You use the comm to ask who it is and he says he’s Ramirez returning from a repair mission, but Ramirez is sitting right next to you in the command module and he’s just as confused as you are. When you tell the guy this over the radio he starts banging on the door louder and harder, begging you to let him in, saying he’s the real Ramirez. Meanwhile, the Ramirez inside with you is pleading to keep the airlock shut. It really puts life on Earth into perspective.

sad way to be an academic if you think a world you might want (not the past; a better present) is impossible: it's basically an abdication of the duty of the academic, which inter alia is about creation of new knowledge to — yes, why not? — help us progress to a better world doi.org/10.5281/zeno...
3.2 We do not have to ‘embrace the future’ & we can turn back the tide
It must be the sheer magnitude of [artificial neural networks’] incompetence that makes
them so popular.
Jerry A. Fodor (2000, p. 47)
Related to the rejection of expertise is the rejection of imagining a better future and the rejection
of self-determination free from industry forces (Hajer and Oomen 2025; Stengers 2018; van Rossum
2025). Not only AI enthusiasts, but even some scholars whose expertise concentrates on identifying
and critically interrogating ideologies and sociotechnical relationships — such as historians and gender scholars — unfortunately fall prey to the teleological belief that AI is an unstoppable force. They
embrace it because alternative responses seem too difficult, incompatible with industry developments,
or non-existent. Instead of falling for this, we should “refuse [AI] adoption in schools and colleges,
and reject the narrative of its inevitability.” (Reynoldson et al. 2025, n.p., also Benjamin 2016; Campolo and Crawford 2020; CDH Team and Ruddick 2025; Garcia et al. 2022; Kelly et al. 2025; Lysen
and Wyatt 2024; Sano-Franchini et al. 2024; Stengers 2018). Such rejection is possible and has historical precedent, to name just a few successful examples: Amsterdammers kicked out cars, rejecting
that cycling through the Dutch capital should be deadly. Organised workers died for the eight-hour
workday, the weekend and other workers’ rights, and governments banned chlorofluorocarbons from
fridges to mitigate ozone depletion in the atmosphere. And we know that even the tide itself famously
turns back. People can undo things; and we will (cf. Albanese 2025; Boztas 2025; Kohnstamm Instituut 2025; van Laarhoven and van Vugt 2025). Besides, there will be no future to embrace if we deskill
our students and selves, and allow the technology industry’s immense contributions to climate crisis

My friend Heather Smith remarked to me recently that young women are urged to “never stop picturing their murder.”
It felt ubiquitous then. It still does. You could be harmed
a little— by insults and threats that reminded you you were not
safe and free and endowed with certain inalienable rights— or
more by a rape, or more by a rape- kidnapping- torture- imprisonment-
mutilation, more yet by murder, and the possibility of death always
hung over the other aggressions. You could be erased a little so that
there was less of you, less confidence, less freedom, or your rights
could be eroded, your body invaded so that it was less and less yours,
you could be rubbed out altogether, and none of those possibilities
seemed particularly remote. All the worst things that happened to
other women because they were women could happen to you because
you were a woman. Even if you weren’t killed, something in you was,
your sense of freedom, equality, confidence.
My friend Heather Smith remarked to me recently that young
women are urged to “never stop picturing their murder.” From
childhood onward, we were instructed to not do things—not go
here, not work there, not go out at this hour or talk to those people
or wear this dress or drink this drink or partake of adventure,
