On the scale of actions I've become used to through academic union contract enforcement, Arday's actions barely register in terms of harm caused. Rarely, our cases receive one (1) national news story. I can think of one case that received more than 3-5 articles*. None received 200+ articles.

There is a difference between scrutiny and entertainment. Jason Arday’s career posed questions, but they shouldn’t have become obsessional. Journalism should seek truth, but not public humiliation.

A man looking out of the window of his sleeper train, as it flies through the air somewhere to the east of Westminster Bridge, presumably moments before Portcullis House is destroyed in a bizarre flying sleeper train disaster. He seems unpeturbed by his imminent death.

The horror at what is being done to Palestinians comes from the same place as the horror at what is being done, yet again, to Jews. Does the government really want us to stop standing in solidarity with the victims of atrocities? If so, it will make the country less safe for everyone.

All of us have a duty to fight antisemitism wherever we see it, and confront anyone expressing antisemitic sentiments. If people in any movement express such sentiments, they should immediately be expelled, as many have already been. No excuses, no hesitation.

Jews are not collectively responsible for Israeli government policy. People demonstrating peacefully for Palestine are not collectively responsible for the attacks on British Jews. Collective punishment for other people's crimes is not justice.

If you’re going to complain that the call “From the river to the sea…” is a call for Israeli Jewish genocide because it means one state only, which is Hillel’s position, you should maybe not depict the state of Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank as one single state, either.

You might have formed the impression that Paul Johnson, former director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, knows what he's talking about. The media treats him like the voice of God. But here he is - and not for the first time - talking out of his hat. Let's break it down in a short thread. 🧵
This is utter garbage. I believe in net zero. We need to get there. But renewables are not competitive. That's why they are subsidised. Fossil fuel markets are highly competitive. It shouldn't be hard to hold these two thoughts at the same time.

The Hamas attack on October 7 was a horrendous crime against humanity. But the only relationship between it and the even greater crimes against humanity being perpetrated in Gaza today is that it is being used as an excuse for what certain Israeli ministers and generals have long wanted to do.

Good piece from the editor-in-chief of @businessgreen.bsky.social. It's odd how little environmental policy (whether good or bad) has featured in assessments of Labour's first year. If we're serious about making climate a major issue, we can't then ignore it when assessing the government's record.
