Charles Dickens witnessed a public execution in 1849. He wrote a scathing letter to 'The Times' calling for the end to such a practice. 200 years later and here we are again. Public executions, fear mongering about immigrants, and (basically) poor laws. Go read Bleak House and get some compassion.

Summer Scene at Mount Atago. . Ukiyo-e woodblock print. About 1800, Japan. Artist Utagawa Toyokuni I
Designed around 1800 by the master printmaker Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769–1825), this exquisite ukiyo-e woodblock print, titled Summer Scene at Mount Atago (Atagoyama Nōryō), captures three fashionable Edo women enjoying the refreshing breeze at the summit of Mount Atago. On the right, an elegant figure holds aloft a large, dark blue paper parasol that casts protective shade over the group. The central woman holds a vibrant crimson fan (ōgi), her fluid purple kimono decorated with delicate pine needle patterns (matsuba) over a bright red undergarment, while her companion on the left wears a blue kimono patterned with geometric motifs. All three sport stylish white head coverings (tenugui), perched comfortably before a rustic hilltop tea stall (chaya) equipped with shelves of ceramic cups. In the background, leafy summer trees frame a sweeping, elevated view of the Edo cityscape spreading toward the distant horizon. The composition evokes a lush atmosphere: the cool, uplifting mountain drafts sweeping up from Edo Bay, the soft rustle of unlined summer fabrics (hitoe), the crisp aroma of fresh green tea served at the summit rest house, the faint, humming chorus of cicadas, and the pleasant relief of stepping out of the blazing summer sun beneath the broad parasol.

Utagawa Toyokuni I was a titan of the Edo period art world whose versatile genius established the Utagawa school as the dominant force in late ukiyo-e printmaking. Renowned equally for his dramatic kabuki actor portraits (yakusha-e) and his refined pictures of beautiful women (bijinga), Toyokuni possessed an uncanny ability to capture the pinnacle of contemporary urban fashion and social poise. Mount Atago, famous for its formidable stone staircase (otokozaka) and panoramic vantage over the shogun's capital, was one of Edo's most celebrated scenic spots (meisho), drawing city dwellers during hot weather for nōryō—the cherished cultural practice of seeking relief from summer heat in elevated, breezy locations.
