There have been a lot of other big lifestyle changes over the past couple of years, but 6 months on Lisdexamfetamine has been work/ life changing. And I'm loving it. Of course I still have many other downsides of ADHD, and meds make emotional disregulation a little worse

The bit that's working best is the fact that meds have 1. Got me in to a regular sleep pattern which 2. Has me up by 5ish every morning 3. Raring to go, starting work by 7am 4. Still using all my coping mechanisms so I'm hyperfocusd for 10 hours 5. Finish a week's work in 4 days, take a day off

The better cog part is going pretty well

I think you may have missed my joke about the UK tax system and how actually getting my ADHD treated has helped me be a better, more productive cog in the capitalist machine.

There is also a lot of "ADHD could be misdiagnosed depression anxiety or trauma- we don't want a misdiagnosis to get you the wrong treatment" "Oh, ok, can I get effective treatment for those other things then?" "Lol, no"

Banjon @beardybanjo.bsky.social · 9h
I read a lot of that as code for "we want to target those with the most severe & obvious needs, and the rest of you who can mask / function better best get on with it" I may be being unkind but I never forget the NHS is primarily a rationing system and this is a report on distribution of rations

One of the most worrying things is that although the headlines don't represent what's in the report, the do represent what government is briefing about the report, and the likely direction of travel.

Is the [Ad] presence theologically or just temporally distinct from the [Bc] presence?

Maybe they're claiming he lied on his nomination papers. This could be quite the scoop.

Yes. I was burning myself out and had really unhealthy (physically and mentally) coping mechanisms- I also had some really effective coping strategies which I've continued to use. The latter have made me ridiculously productive in some respects.

Yes, but it's not the resignation which directly sets the date of the by election. The govt has some leeway. But if they wanted to pick a week in which the greens had beclowned themselves they could have picked any Thursday.

And think about, and talk about, different ways of achieving the same (or better) outcomes for you and your teams. That's often a vital part of, addition or replacement to, formal requests for reasonable adjustments

This is exactly the approach I take when mentoring ND people at work. Your job is to provide value to your team. You will provide great value in some respects, but need more support/ time/ resource in others. Accept this, understand your capabilities, and make sure good& bad at least balance out.

Yeah, the random, but effective coping mechanisms ring true for me. Also weird presentation. Dyslexia occuring alongside obsessive reading, from an early age? That was me. I'm never sure what has and hasn't held me back. And it's not easy to disentangle my personality traits and what's diagnosable

Half the people objecting think that's endorsing discrimination against people with disabilities, and the other half thinks it's endorsing using disability as an excuse
110
Banjon @beardybanjo.bsky.social · 21h
I'm currently putting through an article for my company's internet arguing that disabilities can often become easier to deal with the more senior you are. What's holding it up is the line that disabled people will often need to work harder than those without disabilities

And social media. One of my many rants about influencers.

(I haven't actually seen those clips)

A lot of this is also on employers (and HR departments) refusing to stress the "reasonable" part of "reasonable adjustment". But the solution isn't to restrict diagnosis and treatment, it's to have open a d sensible conversations about reasonableness

Banjon @beardybanjo.bsky.social · 21h
Yes, absolutely. In fact I was refused a couple of jobs early in my career because I had disclosed i couldn't write and it was a genuine requirement. Fortunately with one place the interviewer knew of an equivalent role without that requirement which I got.

Banjon @beardybanjo.bsky.social · 21h
I think it contributes to it. Especially as, by definition, people who refuse tasks are most visible. Not to get all middle age but I do think it's a generational thing in general. A changed view about what the purpose and expectations are at work.
110
Banjon @beardybanjo.bsky.social · 21h
Yes. I agree with much of this and see it myself. I think there are some exceptions where tasks would need to be resigned based on capability (ie let's not ask the dyspraxic guy to put notes on the whiteboard) but should be replaced with equal value tasks.

Banjon @beardybanjo.bsky.social · 22h
And look, I do have some issues with (parts of) the neurodiversity influencer community. Because social media influencer economics can drive some harmful messaging/ behaviours. And there is always a debate about where diagnostic lines are drawn. But this feels like an ideological attack.

Some people think that the ADHD tax is the extra money we spend to replace things we've lost, but it's what I've started calling the withdrawal of the personal allowance.

1. Drugs. Drugs are bad 2. It costs the NHS money. And the NHS is for pensioners, not young or working age people 3. It's a golden ticket to living a life of luxury on benefits 4. Blue haired influencers on tiktoks reposted to Facebook are annoying so the whole thing is fake

Banjon @beardybanjo.bsky.social · 22h
In the 80s I was diagnosed with both dyslexia and dyspraxia- and I got that stigma/ denial it existed (in exactly those terms occasionally). But that was nothing to how ADHD was viewed through the 80s and 90s. So I think ADHD acceptance is both lower in general and started later/ lags behind

A friend of mine has suspected autism on his childhood medical records, and a note saying the parents absolutely did not want further investigation/ diagnosis. Given what it could have meant for his inclusion in school at that time they were probably right.

And in 20 years "why are so many people in their 30s getting diagnosed"
1190
Banjon @beardybanjo.bsky.social · 22h
Anyway, my ADHD diagnosis (and medication, which I self fund) has made me a much better worker and has led to me paying more and more tax. Someone should tell HMT.

I grew up* in back when ADHD was considered a completely fake diagnosis invented by Americans and big pharma and/or stigmatised to the point that a diagnosis was seen as little better than a ticket to a young offenders institution. I wonder why so many people my age got diagnosed in their 30s & 40s

Two reasons. The other one was that headcount was dropped below effective levels by the coalition, and a lot of experience was lost. Correcting for even some of that meant the need for more staff. On some cases more than were lost.

Awful coverage of Jeffrey Archer's death on the BBC. First apparently he's the author of 380 million books... that's prolific. Second, he died in between writing sessions. Are you sure about that; *between*? He wrote, died, then got up and wrote a bit more did he?

Yes. Given that his height doesn't seem to have been especially remarked on, we can presume he was within average height for the time and place, which puts him at about 5ft 5. 5ft7 at the outside.

I found out today that a friend of mine in Cardiff shares an office with what she called "the Welsh space agency", I asked her if she meant Torchwood. She then corrected herself and said "Space Wales" which then led to jokes about bowels of petunias. Oh no. Not again.

If we were still in the EU we'd be joint 14th (out of 28) with Czechia so yes, middle of the pack, but well below the EU average. The EU average (6.4% of GDP) is actually below the US figure (6.8%)

Strict (and "not very") obviously have a range of interpretations but conditionality in UK welfare has only increased over the decades.

Do we have a welfare system that is expensive compared to our peers? As a % of GDP we spend less on non pension benefits than any G7 nation at 5.1% Even the USA spends 6.8% of GDP on non pension welfare.
