Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

lmao sometimes feels like tech people are in kindergarten tier English class!!!! We are currently paying *crazy money* for these people to realise something humanities grads understand and can wield expertly for less than the price of this bad software
resonated with me. As someone still experimenting and learning with Al filmmaking, I'm finding that generating something visually impressive is becoming easier, but creating something that actually makes people feel something is the real challenge.

The reason they want more people to adopt chatbots is because that could theoretically create a new revenue stream by eliminating the need for marketing or advertising and just taking cash from brands/parties/etc to change what the chatbot tells the user.

Also reminder the best help for food pantries, or people struggling or any 'need' is cold hard cash. Always. Always always always. Food pantries can make that money stretch MUCH BETTER THAN YOU CAN, and it'll go to their most urgent needs. I mean, the other stuff is great too but cash is king

I love how Minoque's entire campaign tactic is to target people that don't want to have Trump stuff in their yard, but love Trump. While Deaton's entire campaign is to force his yard signs onto anyone who wanted a Minogue sign. #Mapoli

Making Money was a lot of fun. Libertarians would hate this book. Moist von Lipwig is a great character. I’m definitely staring down the end if the series and that makes me sad. This is such an inspirational world Pratchett built. Unseen Academicals is next. #Discworld

There is something so unbelievably bleak about an article that calmly walks readers through how to navigate being laid off after 50, losing your health insurance, and somehow surviving the years until Medicare. What a broken country.

this comparison to alchemy is super interesting. LLMs feel similar to mercury in that they could be a red herring and exposing yourself to them too much messes up your brain

The alchemists also had clues that led them astray. For one thing, the were obsessed with mercury. Mercury is not very interesting chemically, but it is the only metal that is a liquid at room temperature.

This seemed very significant to the alchemists, and caused them to place mercury at the heart of their alchemical system, and their search for the Philosopher's Stone, a way to turn base metals into gold.

It didn't help that mercury was neurotoxic, so if you spent too much time playing with it, you started to think weird thoughts. In that way, it resembles our current thought experiments with superintelligence.

ok wait this guy rules
1971 he started taking antidepressants and amphetamines, despite the concern of his friends, one of whom (Ron Graham) bet him $500 that he could not stop taking them for a month. Erdős won the bet but complained that it impacted his performance: "You've showed me I'm not an addict. But I didn't get any work done. I'd get up in the morning and stare at a blank piece of paper. I'd have no ideas, just like an ordinary person. You've set mathematics back a month." After he won the bet, he promptly resumed his use of Ritalin and Benzedrine. He is buried next to his mother and father in the Jewish Kozma Street Cemetery in Budapest. For his epitaph, he suggested "I've finally stopped getting dumber." (Hungarian: "Végre nem butulok tovább").
