Rock climbing on the sea cliffs, the guy I was climbing with took a tumble. Coastguard couldn't get to him so summoned an RAF Sea King from Milford Haven to pluck him off the cliff, and it had a TV crew in it! 010

ArcadianAeon @basilbrushoff.bsky.social · 04/10/2026But the more I think about it, the more I think that the comparatively tiny bandwidth of these hobbyist networks isn't a bug but a feature. I think it should be unappealing to corporations. Just text is fine, we already have enough overstimulation on the old internet. 010

ArcadianAeon @basilbrushoff.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Alas, the biggest problem isn't technical but legal: frequency bands like WiFi allow encryption but have a range in the tens of metres, while amateur radio bands have a much more useful range and can support packet data - but encryption is illegal. 120
ArcadianAeon @basilbrushoff.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I keep meaning to have a tinker with some of the stuff in that space like Reticulum or Meshtastic. ArcadianAeon @basilbrushoff.bsky.social · 04/10/2026The more and more it does the former, the more it crystallises around a few giant players and the objectively worse the experience becomes for those still trying to do the latter. Maybe we need to split the two - leave the existing network for the giants and build a new network for the little guy. 120
ArcadianAeon @basilbrushoff.bsky.social · 04/10/2026My strangest, and probably wrongest, take on the modern internet is that I think we have too much bandwidth. The internet's new role as an "content" delivery layer is, I think, at odds with its previous existence as a tool for "communication". 120

ArcadianAeon @basilbrushoff.bsky.social · 04/10/2026And now, this onslaught of AI traffic that nobody wanted gives the remaining website owners the choice between paying protection money to the likes of Cloudflare, moving your content to one of the walled gardens, or getting DDoS'ed off the face of the Earth by rampant AI scrapers. 120
ArcadianAeon @basilbrushoff.bsky.social · 04/10/2026We've also already seen the same enclosure in online communities - we've lost blogs, forums, Usenet, and mailing lists to the monolithic walled gardens of social media like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit. In that case it was driven by discoverability and intentionally dopamine-farming algorithms. 120

People talk about "95% of my traffic is AI scrapers" and it maybe sounds like that would increase your costs by 95%, when in fact the human traffic that used to be 100% of your cost is 5% of your new cost. Your costs have increased 20 times. 284
