This article does a really really poor job of backing up any rationale for banning e-scooters, by telling a bunch of stories about crashes involving motor vehicles.

The groups' primary concerns were that opponents exaggerated how common child marriages are, that banning people under 18 from getting married does not address coercion, abuse, and rape, and that the focus on child marriage ignores the real problem of the loss of reproductive rights and autonomy.

Kristof loves nothing more than telling a lurid story about abuse of young girls, then finding a twist like "can you believe the left is JUST AS BAD as the right on this?" Not true. And his misrepresentations give away the game. Girls and women don't need Kristof white-knighting for them.

Every word of this from @drewmagary.bsky.social. Democrats will likely retake Congress, but what they do next is an open question. That's why it's important for us all to press Democrats -- right now -- to commit to an aggressive agenda of oversight and accountability.
As desperate as Republicans are to hold onto power, the Democratic establishment is even more rattled. An oil slick like Schumer sees his GOP chums on the other side of the aisle get marginalized by an interloper (Trump), and now fears a similar interloper on his side doing likewise. The Schumers of the DNC fear the likes of Zohran Mamdani and AOC (even as she's gone about sanding down her politics over the last eight years) far more than they fear Trump. So if they wrest control of Congress a month from now, their priority won’t be to reform a brazenly corrupt Supreme Court, or to punish Trump and his many accomplices for their endless crimes, or to finally cut off aid to Israel, or even to force an end to that shitty war in Iran. All they’ll do is sit on their candy asses and wait around for the next election. Then they’ll tell you the best way, the most responsible way, to express your anger at their indifference is to continue voting for them.

The argument against trains is that our cities are insufficiently dense to support trains, and that is certainly true for many cities at this moment. However, we should not be designing and zoning for this moment. We should be thinking about our infrastructure in thirty years.

I'm taking my "Norway's wealth tax didn't reduce tax revenue" victory lap.
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021–2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an “exodus” of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times, 2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners’ firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners’ savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms. Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms, nor is there any evidence that the reform induced more bankruptcies. ...

Dazzle analyzes users’ personal photos to understand aspects of their lives, such as their family members or interests, and then can take actions like reminding someone that a pair of shoes they recently looked up is on sale online.

It’s a strategy she learned from her early tenure at Google

The headline refers to "exaggerated portrayals of one candidate as a con artist and the other as a drunk"; the article then spends a lot of time detailing a single incident, which has been widely exaggerated beyond all proportion and recognization, and finally turns to Ramaswamy's career exploits, which are by no measure being exaggerated beyond defensible arguments as to their social impact. Why couldn't this article be accurately headlined: In Ugly Fight For Ohio Governor, Exaggeration of Single Personal Incident Is Pitted Against a Plutocrat's Career and Its Consequences.
