It's genuinely crazy how a pretty blatant act of indiscriminate large-scale terror just kind of got accepted as some combination of a "brilliant intelligence operation" and basically a joke. And how much its defenders see all Lebanese Shia as inherent terrorists.

This is perhaps too generous. The rapprochement with MbS began well before 10/7, and while there were a few correct decisions, there was nothing in their broader strategy that suggested they’d be able to manage a real crisis when it ultimately presented itself.

Has the United States lost the Iran war?  The Iranian regime certainly thinks it has.  The big Iranian funk that came after the 12-Day War in June, which climaxed the Israeli multi-front offensive...

Kind of pointless discussion here. Nothing resembling Israel as it exists today should exist. We should minimize displacement and civilian casualties (total, not above "baseline"). I don't even care what you call it in the end

This is true but the DC foreign policy establishment is contemptuous of academic scholars of international relations, mainstream or not. It is basically part of the professional socialization process. Few in the blob bother with Kenneth Waltz after they graduate from SIPA, SAIS, HKS, Fletcher, etc.

Lots of very pedantic arguing on here about the Iran War as stupid/morally wrong vs illegal. I don't really give a shit, I just think the US both deserves to and needs to lose it.

The Dems are going to absolutely clean up in the midterms, Piker’s comments aren’t going to meaningfully hurt them, and if anything the media fixation on him is going to Streisand effect people into having a more critical view of GWOT in my humble opinion

I think a lot of people are unconsciously ideologically committed to the idea that us Americans unilaterally deserve a veto point over other countries leadership and it leads to a lot of washing our hands of the consequences of that belief.

It's probably useful to imagine yourself making the "we're only upstream of 4.5m deaths from the Iraq war and there were other actors" to Iraqis. I'm happy to make dumber arguments to the American public, but there is an underlying sovereignty question we just paper over

I agree, WW2 is an instructive analogy. We should occupy and divide Israel and put its military and political leadership on trial for crimes against humanity. Meanwhile, every theater in the country should play news reels of war crimes in Gaza and settler violence.

I don’t watch Hasan and generally find political streamers offputting, so if you want to frame outrage bait as a structural critique against the medium, I’d probably be sympathetic. But is he wrong? Post 9/11, the US has killed hundred of thousands of civilians. You can’t address that politely

the last post is intended pejoratively, but since Piker is not Rogan-style dumber than a brick and is genuinely good at broadcasting, yeah, I guess he is the Rush Limbaugh of the left
Ned Resnikoff O @resnikoff.bsk... • 3h
Piker is an influencer first and a radical second. He wants credit for being part of a movement but he also needs to always be the main character. He has nothing interesting to say but he knows how to say it in an attention-grabbing way. The branding is Althusser but inside the box it's Mr.
Beast.

The cognitive dissonance Americans experience at this statement comes from how America has responded to Al Qaeda. We have killed millions in response to 9/11. If we are *worse* than Al-Qaeda, they think, then surely we deserve the same destruction. But maybe destruction was never the fucking answer

They won't and besides American exceptionalism why would it be bad, or any worse than them being US clients? These states and their dynasties are what they are to serve US legal and financial power, which have enormously violent and immiserating for most of the world.

the thing that stands out to me is less the Dem spread than the fact that the GOP seems stuck in the low 40s. if that holds, and if undecideds/double-haters break for Democratic candidates in the final stretch, you are looking at a total collapse for the congressional GOP

The consistent insistence by the Saudis and Americans that the "Houthis" are "just rebels" is really misleading. If you want to oppose them more effectively, at least start by acknowledging this is a highly effective movement in charge of a state.
