PhD in medieval apocalyptic history, esp. 900-1100, but I try to read broadly. Trying my hand at fiction. All prophecies my own (and most likely wrong). He/him.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Beer predates cities. Beer predates agriculture. Beer predates domesticated sheep. Beer predates the end of the Ice Age. Given more finds like this, it is possible beer could be found to predate dogs.

1, I became a historian because it gave me an excuse to study everything: history of religion, " math, " architecture, " language, etc. 2, I had my local library to order engineering and architecture books (not my specialty). 3, stop thinking of students as jobs 1st and people last. Educate people

"Am I missing something here?

In what universe would an engineering student ever study history?!

Do many history students study engineering?!

I *enjoyed* history at school, and I was *good* at it. But no way would I ever have studied it at university."

Dear Current Events, I love reading about the French Revolution and the fall of the Bastille (a highly visible fortified arsenal in Paris), but I'd rather read about other things at this time. Please refrain from giving me reasons to change this policy. Sincerely, etc.

I imagine 17th c. French historians on this app are looking at their feeds, wondering why people are misquoting that saying attributed to Louis XIV, and then getting really, really sad.

Historians are taught to think "It didn't have to happen the way it did" as a tool to consider causality, contingency, and the factors that influence events and memory. As a student, I used it mostly without passion. More and more, however, it feels so very tragic, eps when applied to the present.

One of the biggest "Aha!" moments I ever got from college students while I was teaching was when I told them, like any essay, all maps have a thesis, an argument they are trying to make and convince you about. A map is never neutral.

Insisting that LLMs are Not People is not an academic argument about the nature of sapience or free will. It's a rejection of accountability laundering. If non-determinism made machines responsible for their own actions then revolvers used in Russian Roulette should be indicted for murder.

Why is broccoli disgusting? Really, why? It tastes *great* when properly cooked. I say this because as kids we heard people "joke" that it was bad. It made us think we *should* hate it. I *never* made "bad broccoli" jokes to my kid. She loves broccoli. THAT's why you don't share propaganda.

As someone who got a phd writing about the evolution of Christian apocalyptic rhetoric and its transformation from an inward-looking search for personal salvation to an outward-glaring call to violence, this is...exactly that, on both sides of the podium: Messianic, anti-introspection, and vicious.
