PhD in medieval apocalyptic history, esp. 900-1100, but I try to read broadly. Trying my hand at fiction. All prophecies my own (and most likely wrong). He/him.

Center the Children: A Manifesto for True Liberation
“I don’t like kids,” people openly say. They are the most vulnerable, yet the least protected; the most valuable, yet the most expendable. Their lives are shaped by power they do …

Also, not that I want to saddle classicists with the same problem, but "Roman" would be just as apt, or even a lot closer, for what they have in mind. They want to make an extecution into a public show while calling themselves civilized for doing so --- as they are being evil and morally repugnant.

STOP using “medieval” to describe the atrocities people commit today. “Evil” and “morally repugnant” will suffice.

I seriously dread the day my daughter asks me to stop reading to her. Even if that day doesn't come until she's 50 years old, I'll be very sad.

I've long believed that there is virtue in caution, in doubt, in skepticism, in pessimism even, in not believing that things bend toward a good and righteous future through inertia alone. But there is no virtue, absolutely zero, in cynicism. I've heard enough of it. Doubt I'll take, but not that.

I said to someone earlier today: "Imagine thinking that having a friend's phone number was sufficient without ever calling them. That the number was important, not the friendship." I don't think "society" is moving in that direction, but I do think many who want to shape society are already there.

I just saw a banner ad with classic snake art that read, "Big gov't treads on US military freedoms," and I can't get it out of my head. The hell does that mean other than a statement of pro-military dictatorship? Seriously, wtf. I saw this while visiting the @theguardian.com of all places.

I have often wondered if it enrages Evangelicals that Linus is standing on a stage, proclaiming the nativity of Christ as "the real meaning of Christmas" when two months earlier he was waiting in a pumpkin patch for his great Halloween deity to appear.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

To my knowledge, early Christians didn't go in for Lamb vs. Wolf (i.e. Romulus' wetnurse) imagery. That said, this looks like the kind of thing Romans would have posted but whose only record of it we have is from snarky Christians ironically recording it for posterity.

Beer predates cities. Beer predates agriculture. Beer predates domesticated sheep. Beer predates the end of the Ice Age. Given more finds like this, it is possible beer could be found to predate dogs.

1, I became a historian because it gave me an excuse to study everything: history of religion, " math, " architecture, " language, etc. 2, I had my local library to order engineering and architecture books (not my specialty). 3, stop thinking of students as jobs 1st and people last. Educate people

In what universe would an engineering student ever study history?!

Do many history students study engineering?!

I *enjoyed* history at school, and I was *good* at it. But no way would I ever have studied it at university."

My personal favorite is Rudolphus Glaber. Early 11th century. He explicitly said he interrupted his chronicle so that he could add some verses to ridicule a guy he didn't like. Like dropping a diss track in the middle of a documentary (which honestly should happen more).

Historians are taught to think "It didn't have to happen the way it did" as a tool to consider causality, contingency, and the factors that influence events and memory. As a student, I used it mostly without passion. More and more, however, it feels so very tragic, eps when applied to the present.

Insisting that LLMs are Not People is not an academic argument about the nature of sapience or free will. It's a rejection of accountability laundering. If non-determinism made machines responsible for their own actions then revolvers used in Russian Roulette should be indicted for murder.
