I get that podcasts need to make money and in order to make money they need to get traction on TikTok or whatever, but I gotta tell you, I am not looking for an extended taste test of random snack foods in the middle of an interview with a musician when they could be talking about synth patches

Bleak reminder that we used to see hundreds of academic jobs in the humanities posted every year at this time. Now there are maybe 3 tenure-track English lit jobs in all of Canada. AI is only further devaluing the arts in ways that are decimating how we teach and secure future positions.

Once again, the median pay for an adjunct professor in the United States of America is $3,500 per course. Not per month, per course.

Been looking through the syllabi for the courses I took and TAed for in college and grad school, and goddamn, so much good teaching happened in the age of reading and writing when profs had the freedom to make a killer reading list and just see where things went from there

A festschrift is an edited collection of papers published in honor of an academic's retirement or other major professional milestone. But what would the opposite of a festschrift be?

The least believable part of ALIAS is that Francie's restaurant started turning a profit in less than a year. The second least believable part of ALIAS is that Sydney Bristow had time to be a spy AND a double agent AND do a PhD in English at UCLA

I've been trying to keep this account a little more professional, which is obviously why I'm here to complain about how exhausting it can be to hang out with normies who have never read any critical theory. People are really out there just doing bare minimum 2000s girl power marketplace feminism

finding Dolly Parton photos at work and then finding out that her fans booed Dennis Kucinich for interrupting her show was the thing I needed to learn today.
concert review that mentions the awkward moment when Dennis Kucinich surprised Dolly Parton with a key to the city of Cleveland in the middle of her concert. Dolly Parton being presented with the key to the city by Dennis KucinichDolly Parton at Blossom on August 24th, 1978.

My favorite Dolly Parton anecdote is a story she told about almost crashing her car when she heard Whitney Houston's cover of "I Will Always Love You" on the radio. My second favorite Dolly anecdote is that when Elvis wanted to cover that song, he demanded half the publishing rights & Dolly said no.

@rweingarten.bsky.social, this is a horror. Teachers cited in this article say they're using "A.i." to develop lesson plans for kids with disabilities and imply that they're feeding student data into LLMs. This is using untested, dangerous teach on vulnerable kids AND possibly violating privacy law.

Another reminder that, amidst the myriad challenges facing academia, researchers also have to re-imagine the political economy of publishing. The biggest academic publishers (Wiley, Springer, Elsevier, etc) are also among the most restrictive and rapacious.

Under no circumstances should you read this plot summary out loud to the screenwriter in your life. They will have too many questions about "the why" and "the core wound" and "does the tattoo blink" when you're just trying to laugh about the Sex Purge synopsis

If you're teaching a course on writing about music this coming fall, here's something for your students to chew on. I'm not sure if my favourite part is the bit towards the end where the reviewer blames new music on COVID, but it certainly is a sentence that is in there.

If you teach music history responsibly, inevitably someone will inform you that you are doing it wrong by failing to focus on "the music itself", meaning "the notes on the page". The notes, being representative of specific pitches, are quantifiable in ways that history and politics simply are not.

I doubt anyone would criticize research publications in medicine or engineering as ‘gatekeepy’ or ‘for elites’ - ie inscrutable to laypeople. They should be inscrutable to laypeople. They are inscrutable to me! But humanities scholarship does not NEED to be legible to laypeople.

This afternoon I have the privilege of sitting in on a former graduate student’s doctoral dissertation defense. I wrote her many glowing recommendation letters, all highly deserved. Back then, I thought the payoff was seeing her get into her dream doctoral program. I was wrong: this is even better.

My modest wish for myself is to once again sit in a room with other people who want to learn things and talk about the books and essays we read this week. My big expensive brain does not require an LLM to do that; it requires an employment contract.

Rejecting LLMs isn’t about rejecting their utility or failing to be aware of their power —it’s about rejecting that political project; born out of an awareness that any use of these machines at all promulgates that project and assembles me into adjacent responsibility for its commission.
