The PbtA "moves" or whatever one calls them are micro-contracts with built-in fictional positioning, which means no one has to sit around and pre-negotiate "the stakes" of a particular scene or sequence of play. In theory, it resides in the common-sense interpretation of the move text.

I think a problem with a lot of 'retellings' is that the writer goes in with an attitude like they've 'solved' the original story, or 'corrected' it in some way. That usually results in something bad. But a writer who is in conversation with the work, who is exploring different elements? better.

This is, pretty much the main thing I yell about being the best part of the Moves mechanic. As a player, you have an idea of the range of success/failure. As a GM, you don't have to try to gauge each time, and worry if you've widened/narrowed the scope too much. It removes cognitive burden.

Artists: ART IS A SKILL! I practiced and trained and developed through years of work. It’s not a magical talent. Also Artists: I can’t do math! I’m just so bad at marketing myself! How do I even business?!! You don’t have to like it or be amazing at it, but you can practice new helpful skills.

having done both improv/theatre training and marketing… my nuanced take is that lots of areas give you useful skills for RPGs and they all teach something different from each other (and from how those skills then get used in a game)

Elizabethan playhouses were supplied by a network of tailors, merchants & craftswomen. Their names survive in records, but little is known about their lives. I’m working on new research that brings the stories of these makers & traders centre stage. Here is the project in biscuit (cookie) form. 🍪
A photograph of eight rectangular biscuits (cookies) arranged in two rows on a square white plate. The plate is framed on all sides by a trailing vine pattern in green with pops of red. The biscuits are mostly in shades of ivory, cream, yellow, and grey, with a burst of vivid red and blue in one corner of the arrangement. Moving across the top row of biscuits from left to right, the designs include: neat lines of handwritten names in an early modern parish register; a section of a hand-drawn map from 1561 featuring St Paul’s Cathedral, with street names like ‘Carter Lane’ visible in a tiny spiky font; an extract of text from a funerary monument printed in an early modern book, ending ‘So transitory is our glory’; a section of embroidery from a funeral pall featuring metallic silver armour, crossed gold keys, and two hands holding up a crown. The biscuit designs on the bottom row include: horses prancing past shopfronts on Cheapside in the mid-sixteenth century; a receipt written in early modern secretary hand, which is difficult to read; a portrait of a stern-looking women dressed in a ruff, pearls, and sober dark clothing; swirling calligraphy and dense secretary hand featuring on a will dating from 1638.

I was thinking today about how RPGs need not be “fair.” Yes, if you’re clever, creative, and charismatic you will be better at a lot of games. That’s literally a good thing! You can be skilled at RPG play the same way you can be skilled at board games or sports.

I find myself thinking about this 1941 Harper's magazine article a lot. Point being, good, happy people don't turn into Nazis. Also, @cuny.edu (represent!) students seldom turn into Nazis. But the "scared spectator" and the "spoiled sons" often do. 🗃️ Archive Link below 👇
Kind, good, happy, gentlemanly, secure people never go Nazi. They may be the gentle philosopher whose name is in the Blue Book, or Bill from City College to whom democracy gave a chance to design airplanes—you’ll never make Nazis out of them. But the frustrated and humiliated intellectual, the rich and scared speculator, the spoiled son, the labor tyrant, the fellow who has achieved success by smelling out the wind of success—they would all go Nazi in a crisis.
Believe me, nice people don’t go Nazi. Their race, color, creed, or social condition is not the criterion. It is something in them.
Those who haven’t anything in them to tell them what they like and what they don’t, whether it is breeding, or happiness, or wisdom, or a code, however old-fashioned or however modern, go Nazi. It’s an amusing game. Try it at the next big party you go to.

One of my favorite and most effective design patterns is "tell the player exactly what you're gonna do to them, then do it." You can be SIGNIFICANTLY meaner to the player if you simply tell them ahead of time that that's exactly what you'll be doing, and also the suspense of the warning is a delight
