Salty skeleton pirates for #swordtember. One thing I’ve learned about practicing art over the years is to follow the inspiration while you have it. I started on the daily prompts but then hit “crustacean” and it sent me back into these salty caverns and tide pools to see what else I can uncover.

On a roll with the crusty pirate ghosts, so I’m skipping around the Swordtember prompts a bit to dig into these characters. For the “tidepool” prompt, Here’s Fang the anglerfish cursed pirate wight. Another piece for Curs of the Humpback Coast from the 2025 Appx N Jam.

Swordtember 10: Crustacean This pirate lobster wight is a character from The Curs of the Humpback Coast, my submission to the 2025 Appx N game jam on itch. The space was limited so I didn’t get to really fill out the illustrations, so this was a great excuse to bring him to life.

Swordtember 9: Mandrake Quick one of a young witch having a run-in with a mandrake. These daily challenges really are a great way to hone your style I’ve found. Lots of room to push your mark making and visual vocabulary into new spaces while solidifying your mainstays.

Swordtember 8: Crane Did some kind of crane-inspired harpy-like warrior for for this illustration. I’m really liking the shocks of color in stark silhouette for the swords and might keep that going if it makes sense.

Hot digital art take: flipping your canvas too much while rendering results in overworking your piece. I might do it once or twice on my rough to double check proportions but then Im just gonna rip it and draw without too much overthinking. Draw from your shoulder, keep it loose and you’ll be fine.

Common crowdfunding fulfillment fuckups: 1. If any rewards involve being credited, don't assume the display name of a backer's account on the crowdfunding platform is the one they want to be credited by. "How many genders are there" is a silly question, like "how many polygons are in a video game" The quantity depends on how much time you spend on this. Too many genders will cause lag and performance issues, too few and you can't make much sense of the world.
