Thread. And remember: No matter what happens, we're going to have a TON of work to do AFTER midterms, so think about the questions here in the context of building a long-term practice, ya?

In the end it all comes back to the same thing - men aren’t taught to be men, they’re taught to be terrified of looking or acting like a woman. That’s why they’re less likely to watch TV shows with female protagonists, and read books by women authors. They think it “unmans” them.

Sex and sexuality are not unvirtuous or unrespectable. Whether or not someone might masturbate to your work or be horny about it, whether or not it describes and discusses sex, these are not artistic failings or demerits - and "erotica" itself, genuinely, is NOT a dirty word.

Edited 4 panel comic of Calvin and Hobbes

Calvin's dad approaches Calvin and says "playing internet slang? I'll show you something interesting"
"The two types of slang are Nazi and AAVE. All slang falls into these two categories. Rizz? AAVE. Chad? Nazi"
Calvin responds "yeah"
Calvin's dad continues 'serving cunt? AAVE. -Maxxing? Nazi. Despite being actually funny, -slop is nazi"

The final panel shows Calvin, eyes wide as he struggles to sleep.

That's a very good point about the cartoon network and other leaks that I feel like is understated in all this Companies keeping all of their production materials so private that not even the people who worked on it can access it is 100% an anti-worker measure

Why does Korea have a holiday for the alphabet? Because unlike other writing systems that evolved over centuries, Hangul was the work of one dude who solved mass illiteracy by sitting down and creating a brand new fully-formed system from scratch that anyone can learn almost instantly.

The next time you watch a movie, even one without loads of special effects, look at how long the credits are! Most of those people are not famous, most of them are not doing glamorous jobs, most of them are not making huge amounts of money. And there are more on top of that who don't get a credit!

They love to tell you to bootstrap Until you DO bootstrap Then they post multi-paragraph, pocket-watching dissertations about how "uncomfortable" your success makes them, and how ~something~ should be done (Cuz they never actually expected you to "Make It," FYI) Ask me how I know :)

If you have ever read a book to a baby, you will realize it's not a linear experience. The baby wants to turn pages backward, wants to ask questions (if they're old enough), wants to examine the pages and get really excited if they can say "bear!" even if the word "bear!" is not on the page.

I have been working on the same ticket at work for like three months now. No one has yet asked why it’s taking so long, but the ultimate answer is “because due to corporate mandate I am doing it entirely with Claude”. But, no one listens to me.

This is about game writing but is true of all writing. Screenwriters are better the more they understand filmmaking. Audio fiction writers should understand some sound recording and editing. Etc. Knowing how the thing is made gives you the ability to write toward that process

interesting that conservatives were militantly “we must reward hustle” when the target was affirmative action at elite universities and now, when faced with the success of south asians and other groups, it is “i think we are too meritocratic”

The problem with benevolent dictators is that we have empirical proof that access to that much of power inevitability turns your brain into spaghetti. So we should have elections and term limits for those benevolent dictators and maybe a system of checks and balances and some mechanism for removal.

I keep seeing people say some version of "it used to be normal to politely disagree on things before the Internet," and I don't think that's right. It was and remains normal to not be a shithead in face-to-face communication. We just have less of that now, and WAY less with people we disagree with.
