A screenshot of today’s New York Times report by Peter Baker. Baker’s lede contrasts the weeks-long “scandal” after a “furor erupted over reports” in 1994 that Hillary Clinton had made $100,000 on an investment 12 years earlier with the $28 million Melania Trump is pocketing from a film deal with Jeff Bezos, which, according to Baker, nobody gave a damn about. I have annotated the screenshot to note that Baker’s reference to Clinton’s profits hyperlinks a front-page 1994 New York Times article, while Baker’s reference to Melania’s profits hyperlinks a Wall Street Journal report, because the NYT did not cover the profits.

Vague, toothless coverage is media trying to regain public trust. It's just that they think "public trust" means "Republicans," the way to get it is by avoiding bias (which means saying things Republicans dislike), and the fact that trying this for years hasn't worked is not a reason to reconsider.

If political journalists are concerned not about the public’s lack of trust, but only about Republicans’, and assume right-wing anti-media sentiment is good faith criticism, not bad faith in pursuit of political power, and don’t care about anyone else’s declining trust in them, it makes more sense.

Jeff Merkley & Schumer introduced the "End Crypto Corruption Act," which would bar Presidents, their family, senior exec branch officials, etc from issuing crypto. That'll be introduced as an amendment to the GENIUS Act, which will fail. Then they'll pass GENIUS, & say they did their best. Pathetic.

The Fed didn't use the word "stagflation", but that's what it's warning about. Never a good moment when your central bank says that it's worried about *both* higher unemployment and higher inflation. That's a problem that monetary policy alone can't solve.

One angle I'm always thinking about is how much free stuff Trump promised. There are people currently expecting 1) no income tax under $200k, 2) free IVF, 3) a baby bonus, 4) a $5000 "DOGE dividend." And there is no plan to do that stuff! Just campaign rhetoric.

It is not a coincidence that the most effective protest and resistance of the Trump era come from groups - suburban moms, even conservatives - who are fundamentally optimistic about the promise and values of America. They are betrayed, outraged, and highly motivated to save the nation.

Yeah this is the practical problem with saying “Trump is who we have always been, a natural continuation of our history” - it’s DEmobilizing! It’s enervating. It’s the argumentative version of a sigh of resignation. It’s factually wrong, but more than that, it actively shuts down resistance.

The Naval Academy cancelled a freakin' Ken Burns documentary showing, not because of the content, but because Burns had been critical of Trump www.nytimes.com/2025/04/24/u...
In November, representatives for the filmmaker Ken Burns reached out to the academy with an offer to screen clips from his new six-part series on the American Revolution at the academy in a private event for a select group of midshipmen. The school accepted and booked the event for April 22.

But in late March, the school’s leadership felt that Mr. Burns’s criticisms of Mr. Trump before the 2024 election could cause another outcry from conservative think tanks and Republican members of Congress.
