I don't why I never plotted this before. In the last year in the US, Covid-19 (red) was detected in clinical & public health labs fewer times than influenza (blue), RSV (green), or *rhinoviruses* (orange). Despite similar test volumes for flu/RSV, and about 1/3 the test volume for rhinoviruses!

A friend has Covid right now. They have lost their sense of smell and they're having cognitive problems. This hit me today, as it often does: we made, and continue to make, a huge collective mistake in allowing a virus that impacts the brain to transmit unmitigated globally.

Rather than pop songs, what the supermarkets should really be playing over the PA is longform, slowly developing drone and sound collage kind of stuff because shoppers would stay in the supermarket to find out what the sound does next, and during that time they’d buy additional stuff.

A lot of people think circuit-bending is cool. You can make new sounds. It’s experimental. That’s great. But what if you circuit-bent some old test equipment that was then subsequently used to calibrate a nuclear power plant? Think about what would happen. Yeah, that wouldn’t be so “cool”, would it?

The Telegraph recently published an article about "sickfluencers" titled “How having a disability became cool." We've republished a piece by Julia Doubleday at The Gauntlet pushing back against the article, which she calls "absurd on its face." thesicktimes.org/2026/09/21/c...
A young woman stands by a staircase with a backdrop of tree canopy.  She wears a white, high quality mask and has long dark hair. She wears a teal sweatshirt and black pants. The text reads, “The Gauntlet x The Sick Times. COVID-19 — not TikTok — is disabling young women “Sickfluencers” are symptoms of a mass disabling event. By Julia Doubleday.” “The country is sicker than it’s ever been before” — now why would that be? Six years after COVID-19 hit, four years after the virus has been allowed to run totally rampant without mitigation, the country is sicker than it’s ever been before, but we can’t come up with any reason why that would be other than “women be faking?”

From an essay on the 1970s I wrote a while back:
grew up north of San Francisco in an atmosphere where, once you were twelve or so, hippie dudes in their
thirties started to offer you drugs and neck rubs that were clearly only
the beginning— and it was immensely hard to refuse them. There were
no grounds. Sex was good; everyone should have it all the time; anything
could be construed as consent; and almost nothing meant no, including
“no.” Those who remember feminists as being angrily anti-sex during the
1980s don’t recall the huge task they undertook— and undertook successfully— of pointing out that, like everything else, sex involves power; power is distributed unequally; and unequal power not uncommonly deteriorates into exploitation.
It was the culture. Rock stars were open about their liaisons with un-
derage groupies, and forty-something Woody Allen had cast underage
Mariel Hemingway as his love interest in his film Manhattan (1977). In
1978, Louis Malle released Pretty Baby, in which a then-eleven-year-old
and sometimes unclothed Brooke Shields played a prostitute. (Two years
earlier, Playboy Press had published nude photographs by the aptly named Gary Gross of a painted, vamping Shields at the age of ten in a book titled Sugar and Spice. In 1978, British photographer David Hamilton published Young Girl, a collection of prettily prurient photographs of half-undressed pubescent girls; as Hamilton’s stock-in-trade for years, these images were everywhere as posters and books. On February 1, 1978, forty-four-year-old film director Roman Polanski decided to skip bail and headed for France after being charged with raping a thirteen-year-old girl he had plied with champagne and Quaaludes. (His implied excuse was that everyone was doing it.) Some defended him on the grounds that the girl looked fourteen.

Platner did not magically appear. He was recruited as an avatar, someone to represent the aesthetic of white working class men. That bias is the root of why people believed he was the only populist who could win. And why they let him get much farther than he should have. My latest piece:

Platner Didn't Have To Happen
He wasn't inevitable. He wasn't organic. He was the result of a recruitment effort rooted in the very biases that have allowed him to stay in the race this long.
