say what you will about the myriad valid concerns with current LLMs but I personally will never get over the fact that Aaron Swartz was prosecuted to his literal death for downloading JSTOR and then a decade later, they downloaded & ingested the entire world and our IP laws just went ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

lmao I'm glad the Regency Orlando seems, at least surface level, to be particularly supportive of Megaplex this year, feels like more so than previous years... but they're gonna get fucking skewered for some of these blatantly AI-generated promo materials

i swear to god, asking: “what is the problem you are trying to solve? followed by: “what information or data do you need to solve this problem?” are like, some of the single most important questions you need to ask a stakeholder on all kinds of projects, and so many people skip it

The difference in utility between the use of ML to tackle big data problems that would otherwise be intractable & the use of LLMs to produce pointless slop is so large they cannot both be usefully described as “AI“. The first is making real progress, the second is dragging us towards the abyss.

Reading through the workshop code was the first time I looked at a Bevy codebase and though "oh, so THAT is how all these parts fit together!" Seeing the "Bevy way" patterns used so cleanly (but importantly, in context) has me feeling a lot more confident about diving into my own game.

That's why I was so happy to find @mholiv.bsky.social's GPN workshop! A minimal but complete game written in up-to-date, idiomatic Bevy, utilizing the latest features and conventions in one concrete example! And most importantly, a guided tour! codeberg.org/mholiv/gpn-s...

What I'd really love is a sort of "guided tour" through Bevy, one that highlights the most important or heavily used parts and patterns of the engine, and why you'd use them. From there, it's easy to play and explore, applying and extending those patterns and referring to the examples as necessary.

For me at least, learning components in isolation doesn't really help me; I need to see how the whole system fits together, where the seams are, etc.

🚀⚡Astro @astro.ftl.sh · 11/08/2026
The beginning was especially rough; the getting started guide is pretty anemic and mostly boils down to "read the examples," which are useful! But there are just so many of them, it's hard to know where to even start, and they're largely showcases of specific features or domains.

For the past week I've been trying to learn Bevy, building on my ~decade of on-and-off hobby game development and my ~year of on-and-off hobby Rust development. It felt so alien. For what ever reason, my brain just could not grasp how to build a game on top of an ECS, the "shape" of the game.

I don't remember seeing an image of Earth before that captures the (thin, fragile, tiny layer of) atmosphere so clearly. I mean, look at that.
Zooming in on the photo of Earth taken by astronauts on Artemis II on their way to the Moon, you can clearly see the Aurora Borealis and thin layer of atmosphere wrapping around the planet.Zooming in on the photo of Earth taken by astronauts on Artemis II, you can clearly see the thin layer of atmosphere wrapping around the entire planet.

Just give me 20-40 minutes each, talking about what their lives were like, walk me through it! The day-to-day life of a 1400s nobel in England? A Buddhist monk in 1200s Japan? A Swedish farmer in the 900s? Pick an archetypal person and give me basically a historical slice of life.
