The work happening in libraries is quiet, but still important. Keep it on your radar because a world without libraries would be awful for all of us. Also, stop by your local library and say thanks to the workers there, sit a minute and relax in a place that’s not trying to get anything from you.

A lady came in, and as you know, in public libraries, there are a lot of people who are homeless, so they just need a place to be. She comes into the central library and goes up to the information desk.

She has very interesting attire, and this big bag. She asks to see the head of the library. I was the head of the library. The librarian — and this is what they do — tried to get more information from the person. They said, “Well, what would you like to see her for?” She opens the bag and she puts out on the table an injured bird.

And the librarian says, “Oh, what would you like her to do?” And the woman said, “Somebody’s got to care.”

Yes, reading and literacy rates are dropping. But the fault here isn't with kids but adults and the mess we've made of our education system. We aren't supporting kids. We can keep printing op-eds whining about college students who can't read a full book, or we can fix an education system we broke.

South Africa Abandoned by his own mother, he was found by Gogo, coming home from work. She took him to the police. Days later, Gogo went to check on him. Police said no one claimed him. She went to the orphanage and adopted him. Raising him with so much love until he became the man he is today.

Libraries tossing out weeded titles is not a travesty. 🧵 1. libraries MUST weed. We don't have magic shelves with unlimited space. 2. we do try to find alternatives to recycling. Book sales, free tables, and places like Better World Books get the majority of weeded titles. 1/3
