This very much. Tbf I've read most comments as saying MPs should be subject to the horrible rules they set *in hope of them realizing the rules are horrible*. Rather than justifying the rules as long as MPs have to do it too.

I grew up knowing the stretch of Great North Road from the Grey Lynn shops down to Western Springs as "Chinaman's Hill". I always assumed that meant there were market gardens there! Though the pictures in that article have now made me think they were more likely down by the springs (for free water).

I teach statutory interpretation. For part of the course we look at how to translate policy ideas into final legislation - identifying the need to legislate, crafting wording, advice from officials, select committees, SOPs etc etc. The eg we use is conversion practices: a short piece of topical law.

Anyway. While 95% of the country was having a good faith debate about a hard issue on where to draw the line, 5% were mourning their loss of capacity to act abusively. Bob McCoskrie and, apparently, Winston Peters are speaking for that 5%. And they want to impose their views on everyone else. No.

Hello Bone Colleagues,
I have invented a new type of ankle and I'm very excited to show it to you. Early raccoon trials suggest a 60% increase in scurrying speed and dramatic increases in fine motor banditry. I know we are not supposed to create super raccoons, but I think you'll change your mind and professional ethics when you see how cute they are. I believe we are on the cusp of a new era in advanced human scurrying because if medical science has taught me anything, it's that improvements in raccoons correspond 1:1 to improvements in humans.

As Julie and the article have noted, Nats have campaigned on it bc on the surface it appears to promise transport solutions. Especially to communities who might not feel like they benefit from other transport projects happening far away from them e.g. CRL.

Liz @arvethli.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Some level of upgrades to Mill Road has been in future transport plans for over a decade. But iirc from public consultation, a lot of the issues re getting around that part of Auckland were key intersections that needed fixing, rather than a second motorway.

Impossible to invent something as absurd as the Minister for Cracking Down On Truancy And School Lunches not knowing it is the school holidays www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...
Oct 6, 2026 2:56 PM
RNZ Live
'Why are you not in school?' It’s school holidays

David Seymour stopped to speak to some children at Velocity Valley in Rotorua, giving them a piece of advice.

“Don’t trust politicians,” he said. “Are you a politician?,” they questioned.

After the three children asked if he was going to be on the news and waved at the cameras, he said: “hey, one question, how come you guys aren’t at school?”

It’s school holidays, they said.

Seymour said they could still go into school, but the kids didn’t seemed thrilled by that idea.

“No, it’s ok,” they said before walking away.

But at this point, any local govt elected member not loudly and actively opposing central govt overstep is a fucking collaborator. If you *as an elected representative* refuse to fight for local democracy then you don't deserve to be part of it. Have some respect for your constituency and resign.

And I KNOW that the intention is to overwhelm and undermine. And that compromise might have seemed a sensible choice at first, to not make too much fuss in the hope of avoiding petty revenge by ministers...

NAct seem determined to break local govt to the point that it's non functional. Forcing $$ to be spent on central govt whims, restructuring, repealing 3waters that would've provided infra funding, capping rates so councils have no $ to spend on services, passing laws w massive $$ risks to councils.

Liz @arvethli.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
This govt continues to cause chaos into its final moments. Not content with requiring local govt to be restructured at the same time as writing new plans, they've also told Auckland Council to get rid of planning rules that were agreed through public submissions and an independent hearings panel.

Liz @arvethli.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Also undermines the extensive public involvement in council processes, if central govt can just come in and decide to get rid of rules that were introduced through a public plan change process 🙃

Quote posts have been turned off the first-scary-media post, but I'll show you mine anyway: These wheeling fuckers in Return to Oz when I was about 4. I had nightmares about them. I guess the benefit was that I didn't see the "room full of heads" scene until I watched the whole thing in my 20s 🙃
Photo of a Wheeler from the film Return to Oz. They were people with wheels for feet and hands who wheeled around on all fours like terrifying zoomy apes. They also have a scary mask face.

This was my immediate assumption. Records teams often have minimal operational funding and few staff, and as soon as that is disrupted (by funding cuts or restructures or someone deciding that it's not worth having a dedicated team) then often the records are functionally lost.

In NZ, here are some contexts in which I might expect to use/hear "tea": "Do you want a tea/ some tea" - do you want a cup of tea "What's for tea?" - what's for dinner "Do you want to stay for tea?" - do you want to stay for dinner Morning tea / afternoon tea - tea/coffee + snack (often sweet)

Looking through some old stuff and found this cartoon I cut out c1996. They just never really have new ideas, just new packaging. (For younger readers - right wing think tank the NZ Initiative formed out of a merger of the NZ Business Roundtable and the NZ Institute in 2012.)
Photo of a black and white cartoon with a bunch of men sitting around an executive board table. A sign in front reads “Quiet please, Roundtable in session”. From left to right they are saying:
“The govt should get out of education and health…”
“We need more contestability in social welfare…”
“the govt should sell ACC and the post office…”
“We should privatise electricity and roading…”
“Seen the polls? Winston could be the next PM”
“That’s disgraceful. What happened to the New Zealand we all knew and loved?”
