I thought this was just beautiful. Kurt Vonnegut takes a walk to mail a letter:
She calls out, “Where are you going?” And I say, “I am going out to get an envelope.” And she says, “Well, you’re not a poor man. Why don’t you buy a thousand envelopes? They’ll deliver them, and you can put them in a closet.” And I say, “Hush.”

I go next to the postal convenience center down the block at the corner of 47th Street and Second Avenue. The woman behind the counter says, “Thirty-nine cents for a stamp.” I say, “I only brought thirty-seven. When did that change?” She looked at me a long time. “Thirty-seven isn’t enough.” “Well that oughta be enough for one envelope,” I said. The line was getting longer.

The lady moved her hand into her coat. I knew this routine. I backflipped behind the man behind me in line, wrapping my elbow around his throat as I landed. By the time the stamp seller had unloaded her clip, I had full cover. The gentleman’s body dropped to the floor, six holes smoking. The package he was carrying fell to the floor with a heavy clunk. Whatever was in there, it would do.

I rolled my foot over the cardboard and did a “flick up” as they call it in soccer. I bounced the package once or twice on the back of my foot as the mail lady reloaded, then I launched it high and spun 360 to deliver my patented “Rising Phoenix kick”. The package caught fire as it shattered through the protective plexiglass window and struck the woman’s head with all the force and hatred I had learned to channel in my grueling tutelage under five fallen Wudang masters in my youth. The lady’s body exploded off of her bones, leaving just a blackened skeleton spinning in her office chair. “So it goes,” I said, but no one laughed. I guess they weren’t big readers.

And I go home. And I have had one hell of a good time.

We are dancing animals. How beautiful it is to get up and go out and do something. We are here on Earth to fart around. Don’t let anybody tell you any different.

Man, imagine you're minding your own business, getting kind of drunk with your friends at a picturesque brewery in Maine, when suddenly John Roberts walks by and you get to start heckling him. Must have felt incredible. That's the dream. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/u...
The chief justice used to preside over a Supreme Court whose members were afforded more privacy and freedom than many other public officials. Once, years ago, Mr. Lipson and the chief justice found themselves up the peninsula from Port Clyde without a car, Mr. Lipson recalled in an interview. So he stuck out his thumb by the side of the road and a pickup truck pulled over. He and the nation’s top jurist hopped in the back and hitchhiked back to town.

Now, Mr. Lipson said, he is cautious about introducing his friend to strangers. This year, on an outing to nearby Monhegan Island, people recognized the chief justice as he walked by a brewery and started to chant: You should be ashamed.

I hate that most places strip the right to vote from the incarcerated. They are still humans and they are still citizens, and they should retain the right to petition their government. Especially since the govt often tends to abuse this population.

People don't really understand how, as a pre-transition trans person, you basically live with wall-to-wall pain. It's incredible how you learn to screen it, rationalize it, diminish it, as an act of survival, simply because society doesn't want you to have an alternative.

9. Trans people and their families make up a significant portion of the Democratic base in Ohio, and the race is currently separated by a single percentage point. If Acton loses this one by a point, it will not be because she stood up for transgender kids. More likely, it will be because she didn't.

So I went to the National Gallery yesterday, and a real highlight was Saint Michael Triumphs over the Devil by Bartolomé Bermejo (1468). He's just a silly little guy. Don't you think he looks like a Muppet?
Detail from painting mentioned above. The creature has the body or a cat, snakes for elbows, four chicken feet, an extra face in his belly, scales on his legs, and wings that look part bat, part moth. His face is black and he has red eyes that look like glass and a huge semi-circle mouth full of sharp white teeth.

What the US is doing to Cuba is more than a humanitarian crisis. It is a genocide as defined by the United Nations. www.un.org/en/genocide-...
Definition

Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide

Article II

In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

1. Killing members of the group;

2. Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

3. Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

4. Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

5. Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

Whew, one of the House Judiciary subcommittees is holding a hearing about court expansion today, and Rep. Hank Johnson (the subcommittee's highest ranking Democrat) delivered a sermon I just transcribed a paragraph that really resonated
screenshotted text reading as follows--

Rep. Hank Johnson: Abraham Lincoln once said “This government cannot endure half slave and half free.” Yet, that seems to be the vision for America that Chief Justice Roberts and the conservative supermajority of the Supreme Court envision. Where some enjoy easy access to the ballot, others are forced to overcome legal barriers designed to make our voices quieter. Our nation is now in Jim Crow 2.0. We are a nation where the right to vote once again can be diluted, restricted, or simply ignored, and where the voices of rich and powerful people carry more weight than the voices of ordinary Americans, but particularly Americans who look like me. Our 250-year experiment in self-governance can only succeed if Americans decide that the clock has run out on the far right’s attempt to overturn our democracy. So, we can either sit back as our Supreme Court continues to act without any restraint or checks and balances, or, we can do something about it. The American people deserve accountability for the damage that has been done. The American people deserve a judiciary that serves our democracy, not a narrow ideological agenda that only benefits the rich and powerful.

In warm pre-dawn light, three wild horses are spending quiet time together: a black horse is resting lamb-style on the ground, his blue roan friend is standing next to him and extending his head and neck over the black horse's back, while their chestnut pal is standing with his head over the roan's back. They are in a grass and sagebrush setting with the mildly jaggy silhouette of a backlit mountain in the background.In early morning warm pre-dawn light under a pastel pink and purple cloudy sky, a black and a bay horse are snuffling muzzles together, while two friends are in the background: a black horse laying down and a blue roan standing over him.Three wild stallions walk and graze together in warm pre-dawn light with a mountain backlit behind them - a black horse, a smaller blue roan, and a tall bay.

A warm dark gray horse with a blaze and a pink muzzle is shown head and shoulders, facing right to left in the frame, with some grass sticking out of the side of his mouth. He is standing in tall lush green grass with a treeline of oaks in the near background.The same horse, same head, shoulders view, as the horse turns his head over his right shoulder to look behind him.
