They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

A sandhill crane soars over the marsh at Whitewater Draw, looking down for a moment to squawk at all the cranes gathered on the ground. #photography #birbs #wildlife
A sandhill crane is in a glide path in the air, with a light blue sky background. The crane's bill is open as it looks slightly towards the ground and calls out to other cranes. The wings are straight out side to side with the tip feathers flared out.A moment later as the crane flies above the camera, traveling left to right in the frame, with the sun lighting its head and neck.

For Foal Friday, a scene from Lost Creek, from my visit a couple years ago. The BLM has scheduled a roundup/removal for the Red Desert complex, of which Lost Creek is one of the HMAs. These beauties are probably going to lose their freedom. #photography #wildhorses
Against the backdrop of a vivid and somewhat stormy sky, a dark gray stallion is herding a young mare, her foal, and her yearling from right to left in the frame. The yearling's and foal's mouths are open as they champ their teeth to say "we're just babies, be gentle!" while the mare trots with one eye on her kids.A moment or two later, as the stallion continues driving the mare and her foal and yearling forward.

A pretty bay mare in the Little Book Cliffs range, with a view of the beautiful landscape there #photography #wildhorses
Smallish in the frame, a sleek bay mare steps down a short steep slope to a creek bed which is mostly just out of the frame to the left. She is surrounded by sagebrush and sparse grasses and rocks, and in the background we see the walls of a long cliff rising above the scene. The bay mare steps closer to the little creek with its rocky bed, which flows through the lower-middle of the image; she is approaching from the right side of the frame and we can see the small star marking on her face. Here we zoom out again to see more of a rocky foreground as the mare steps across the creek, the wall of the cliff in the backgroundComing in closer again as the mare steps purposefully across the creek, a large boulder in the foreground.

The Sand Wash Basin roundup/removal is starting this week, focusing first as I understand it on the out of bounds bands who live outside of the boundary fence. #photography #wildhorses
A dark gray mare stands close together with a dun stallion, facing generally left to right in the frame, among grass and sagebrush. A fence made of wire and vertical wooden slats is seen just behind them, entering the image from the left edge, and the sky is a clear light blue.Zooming out, the fence is in the lower left foreground, extending towards the upper right corner of the image. The mare and stallion of the previous image are standing to the right of the fence, while on the other side of the fence a band of about 5 horses are variously grazing or looking towards the mare-stallion pair. From this angle we can see a distant low mountain ridge in the background.

The current configuration of Assateague Island's state line band: half sisters Coco and Sapphire, and stallion Foxy's Gift. I met up with them on this very very buggy summer day. Poor Coco was getting hit the worst with the deer flies. #photography #wildhorses
A smaller buckskin pony mare and a stout bay mare stand side by side on a beach, with some low dunes in the background under a light blue sky, looking right at the camera. The bay is looking cheerful while the buckskin looks vaguely miserable with the biting flies. The buckskin mare leads the bay mare on a walk along the beach surf, with a chestnut pony stallion following a few lengths behind the bay mare. The three ponies have stopped to stand right by the shallow water of the surf, swishing flies. This is a wider angle show that shows a tongue of ocean water sloshing up towards their feet. The buckskin mare, Coco, walks purposefully along the surf, absolutely covered in biting deer flies.

I file grackles within the sassy bird classification, and as such they are some of my favorites. This character is a boat tailed grackle, in Assateague State Park. #photography #birbs
A grackle, a large black songbird with glossy black plumage, long wide tail, and a bright yellow eye, is perching on one of the top branches of a short pine tree, facing right to left in the frame; its feathers are fluffed up for a moment. The background is a light clear blue sky.Just a moment later, the grackle has smoothed its feathers and is gazing up towards the upper left corner of the image.

Shackleford Banks: these 3 ponies are a little band & the white ibises gathered around them as they grazed the edge of this marsh - the disturbance caused by pony feet rustles up bugs and such that the birbs capitalize on. #photography #wildhorses

In the center, a bright chestnut is also facing away from the camera but looking over his right shoulder at the third pony on the right - another bright chestnut with flaxen mane and tail. THere is tall grass in the foreground and reeds and a line of trees in the background under a light blue clear sky.Closer in, the two chestnut ponies face away from the camera as they graze but both look back towards the photographer. Three white ibis birds are gathered at their feet, poking around in the marsh mud. Here one chestnut pony is grazing, while the older black mare stands just behind him, and the third chestnut peeks out from behind the black pony, gazing brightly at the camera. This series of three images all shows the same general scene: in the upper right, a mom white-tailed prairie dog is sitting upright on her haunches while two of her pups are cuddled at her side, with a third pup approaching from the lower left corner of the image. The setting is the mounded-up dirt around their burrow with sparse grasses surrounding and an impression of out-of-focus green and tan sagebrush in the background. In this first image, momma prairie dog has her face very close to one pup who is sitting upright facing her. Here the pup getting a cuddle from mom almost has their arms around her, while the sibling crouches in front of the two.The pup that is sitting up seeking attention has their muzzle right in mom's face as she looks off in the distance, while still seeming patient and affectionate.

A distant blue mountain ridge peeks out from behind the background shrubs in the upper left corner of the image. The black pony stands on a hill that slopes up from lower right to the center-left edge of the image. He faces away from the camera, and looks back towards the camera over his left shoulder, his bush forelock covering his eyes. The black pony grazes here on a bald mountain top, with the rocky squarish summit in the background under a cloudy sky. Wild horses of the Lower Salt River in the Tonto National Forest share some ideas together. #photography #wildhorses
Three wild horses are shown in close up with their heads close together. A reddish chestnut stallion on the left, a bay in the middle, and a light sorrel with a wide blaze on the right. The stallion's neck is arched as he reaches to snuffle at the bay's muzzle while the sorrel is starting to look slightly away.A moment later, upset and squealing! The stallion's mane is flying as he quickly lifts his head and lifts his left front hoof high while the bay has ears pinned back as they pull their face away from the stallion. The sorrel with the blaze is basically unaffected and continues to just chill out next to the other two.

In an expanse of knee-high sagebrush extending behind him, a bay pinto horse stands on alert in the right half of the frame. He is holding his head up high and looking towards the camera in mildly concerned curiosity. Here the stallion has proceeded at a trot through the sagebrush, which in this image reaches almost as high as his shoulder and stifle. He trots down a slope from right to left, ears pricked forward. The stallion stops again, in chest-high sagebrush, again looking towards the camera.
