I will be eternally grateful to have been born in a literate culture where literacy was valued and expected and I still had the time, attention, and freedom to develop a literacy practice. Understanding context, inference, vocabulary, perspective, affect — all powerful, useful skills and values.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Hey #BookSky friends, I have an interesting bit of info to share—about the state of publishing. Storytime: I am an author of fiction/nonfiction with a NY agent, full time writer for 10 years. I can verify 2026 is the WORST for getting in print. Lots of reasons, but I learned something NEW in Sept 1/

Tyrants view educated citizens as their greatest enemy. Slaveholders stopped the enslaved from learning to read. Nazis burned books. Dictators censor media. That’s why Trump is attacking education, science, museums, the media, and the arts – to prevent us from learning. It's Fascism 101.

The second chance she always dreamed of is only a reality away.

Theo's best friend and her first crush, Summer, died tragically when they were teenagers. Ten years later, Theo has a new job and is returning home. The scars of that tragedy run deep, but she's determined to face her past and move on.

Until a wish on a comet catapults Theo into an alternate reality where she and Summer never became friends… and Summer never died.

Summer falls in love easily, even though it's rarely returned. As a dropout, former bully, and gas station clerk, she knows she's not really a catch. When Theo shows up on Summer's doorstep, she offers the bed in her tiny apartment while Theo tries to find a way home. It's a small sacrifice, but then Theo looks at her as if she's the most important woman in the world, and Summer wishes she could give her so much more.

As they grow closer, Theo discovers there's a time limit on this miracle, and she has to make a choice. Can she really abandon her family and friends to stay with Summer?

Or will she have to say goodbye to Summer for the second time?

Picture of a book cover. The title reads "Fractures Between." The Author reads "Beatrice Mckinsey."

The cover depicts two women sitting back to back, a jagged white line separating them. The woman on the left is white, has long dark hair and glasses, and sits alone in a darkened wood. The woman on the right is white, has short red hair, and sits alone at the side of of a lake, during a Sunset. Their fingers cross the white lines and intertwine with each other, implying that they're reaching out for each other across a split in realities.

GMOs are good actually and always have been. Sometimes you need to make a more robust corn by splicing together various corns. The PROBLEM with GMOs is the people who own them will modify them in ways that are profitable for them rather than simply better for people buying the product.

Tim Curry's contribution to movies and roles that end up in the gay cinema pantheon across genres is absurd. For me, Clue is a perfect cast with iconic performances, but without Curry being the emcee of the circus it would not be the movie I could go back to over and over again and still smile.

That parts of the internet are already busy being nasty about Dolly Parton of all people shows so starkly how much the snuffing out of any positive, kind, pro-social feeling has become a bedrock, load-bearing industry. If they can’t totally monetize your heart, they’ll happily monetize rotting it.

my wife has a friend who sent Dolly Parton a painting she made & a letter explaining how much Dolly's music meant to her while she was transitioning. Dolly responded to it personally & paid for her top surgery. Sounds like an urban legend but it's real. I think we're going to more stories like this.

I love when fantasy series have a dude called something like Stephen the All-Seeing, Keeper of the Demon Sword, hero of the Volcano Age. But in some tiny village, he's known as Bees Steve, that weird guy who loves beekeeping. The more uppercase titles the legend has, the funnier the contrast is.
