There's a critic I like (Darren Mooney), who makes the point that DS9 challenged the assumptions Star Trek was built on (esp TNG), but no one every really knew how to respond, so DS9 ends up as kind of an evolutionary dead-end. That might've bled into the 3rd gen of Trek, even w/SNW's nostalgia?
