I haven't had time to read the original article, but the coverage here focuses on the "hidden curriculum" as a barrier to lower class advancement in academia. What about the availability of extra resources to sustain periods of low income needed to succeed? www.nytimes.com/2026/09/18/b...

The Working Class Face a ‘Class Ceiling’ in Elite Occupations
Being female or a person of color has long been seen as a disadvantage in hiring and promotion. A new study of college professors shows that class may loom as large.

worth tying this into the political economy of the slave south as well. from roughly the 1820s onwards, slavery became enormously lucrative in ways that had never been seen before. slave traders became millionaires. large planters had tremendous purchasing power. just huge amounts of wealth.

We are witnessing a shock redistribution from the many to the rich: The profit share is at its highest level since WWII. The first bump was sellers’ inflation which ushered in Trump. The second bump is Trump’s chaos casino designed to push up profits.

In the main place Marx lived, the century following the publication of the Communist Manifesto saw capitalism develop in such a way that the proletariat became a numerical majority, developed class consciousness, formed itself into a political party, took power, and socialised much of the economy.

Beginning my research seminar, as always, with Lynn Hunt's essay How Writing Leads to Thinking (and Not the Other Way Around). Should be mandatory reading in light of the impact of AI. www.historians.org/perspectives...
Writing is stressful. Sitting in my computer chair my neck and shoulder muscles almost immediately tense up as I dig around in my brain for the best phrase or even any coherent string of words, whether I am writing an essay like this one, a book chapter, a letter of recommendation, or an email message to a friend. Writing is time-consuming. It’s a great way to pass the time on a long airplane flight because you lose track of the passage of time altogether. It’s even better, from that point of view exclusively, than watching an episode of Mad Men on your laptop. Writing means many different things to me but one thing it is not: writing is not the transcription of thoughts already consciously present in my mind. Writing is a magical and mysterious process that makes it possible to think differently.

Something exceedingly British about being evicted by your landlord, a veterans’ charity called ‘the Poppy Factory’, which somehow has a property portfolio and is kicking out tenants in order to jack up rents before the new renters’ rights come into force
A screenshot of an FT article, which reads “Her landlord, the Poppy Factory veterans’ charity, told the FT it was evicting “a small number” of tenants to bring properties up to market rate before the new rules on rental increases came into effect.”
