the thing about impeaching Vought is that it will ruin his life. pull his kids and wife in for sixteen hour depositions. refer them all for perjury. scream in his face. when you're done, if it didn't work, do it again.

fundamentally Trump going unpunished is an outcrop of an entire culture of elite impunity, from white collar crime to the Iraq war to the #MeToo backlash; the idea that the powerful (largely white men) can never and should never face consequences lest others of their caste might too.

there are moral arguments against the death penalty in its ideal form but in real life you never need to get there. the prior question is "can the state be trusted to end the life only of the rightly convicted without torture?" and the answer is no

Delightful also to hear real eagle noises. In movies eagles are always dubbed with hawks, since hawks found fierce and eagles sound like adorable squeakers.

Astonishing really how ADHD-denialism so closely matches early trans-denialism (say, a decade ago, before it went mask-off eliminationist), to the point that it includes the exact same personalities, again vomiting their know-nothing opinions all over the place.

this is a bit of an obsession of mine especially here in charlottesville. the cost of commercial real estate is prohibitive if you want to experiment and the city seems categorically opposed to small lots and small units that could allow people to start businesses without a huge capital investment

It’s very simple. A reality TV host became dictator because he turned down a role for Sharknado 4 and that’s why the king of outer space, who cheats at Diablo, got to kill Africa. Now the economy is controlled by a sex cult that has something to do with Harry Potter fanfic because of robots.

Discworld QOTD, from Lords and Ladies
Elves are wonderful. They provoke wonder.
Elves are marvelous. They cause marvels.
Elves are fantastic. They create fantasies.
Elves are glamorous. They project glamour.
Elves are enchanting. They weave enchantment.
Elves are terrific. They beget terror.
The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.
No one ever said elves are nice.
Elves are bad.

So here's a quote from @pablo.show that applies to not only his Clippers investigation but the best of what journalism can be: www.nytimes.com/athletic/756...
"I think that we have the ability to do something that the rest of our culture is yearning for, which is make people who are too rich to care about anything resembling the public interest worry that maybe they need to tell us the truth."

And that needs to change. The Speaker is a servant of the whole House, their mouthpiece and agent; the true power rests in the actual membership. But they have largely forgotten this. Hopefully they’re remembering now, and if not, may they be replaced by others who will.

Tsenacommacah Chamber of Commerce @archaeomancer.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
The House has delegated most of its actual power to the Speaker as part of a devil’s bargain—the Speaker, largely unaccountably, does the unpopular stuff while minimizing the number of everybody else to take potentially unpopular votes. In other words, to govern.

Tsenacommacah Chamber of Commerce @archaeomancer.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
I am so goddamn serious: the next Congress absolutely must remove the power of the Speaker to *unilaterally and indefinitely disband the House of Representatives*. Ideally as part of a broader package of reforms to modernize and reinvigorate the people’s legislature.

Worrying about this beyond my pay grade, but as an archaeologist one of my professional duties is the preservation bit of "preservation by record". In other words: when we take something apart to see how it's put together we have a sacred duty to make that knowledge accessible to the future.

Fascinatingly, the answer to this seems… a little unclear? There seems to be a mechanism by which the legislature breaks a tie vote for governor, or for certain other statewide civil officers, but for legislative races the answer might be “snap redo election.”
